Abbey Zero Card

I have taken up the Maestro's advice and obtained one of these for my holiday on the continent this year.
To avoid paying the interest on cash withdrawals, can I load on my spending money before I go and have a credit balance on which to draw? Has anyone tried this with this card?
Cheers.

Most credit cards won't allow a credit balance but the best people to ask are Abbey.
Won't you pay a cash handling fee anyway for cash advances?0 -
They may block the card if the positive balance is significant (other card providers have been known to do this).
Why not open and use a Nationwide FlexAccount for your cash withdrawals?
Don't forget to take back up cards for both cash and purchases.0 -

My thinking is that I would not have to pay a cash handling fee were the account in credit. That worked last time with an Egg Money card, but they have a loading fee.0 -

I am now thinking about your nationwide advice. If I open a Flexaccount, it means that I can load on my spending money, gain interest on it, and still have no fees for speding/withdrawing cash. Sounds like the best deal.
I am glad that we met. :beer:0 -
You cannot load money onto the zero card, i see what the OP is thinking but they closed this loophole last year!0

Cheers Simon - looks like my best option is to use the Zero card for buying goods and loading a Nationwide Flexaccount for lifting money at ATM's.0 -
Can anyone help me please? I applied for the new abbey zero cad and I just recived both my pin and card but when i called to activate it, I was told it has been cancelled. Just wondering if this is a one-off or peculiar with Abbey as I have had bad experiences with them in the past...thanks0

I have used a Nationwide Flexaccount Debit card for years abroad and it is great. I also have a Nationwide credit card to pay for foreign hotels, flights, meals etc. I then just use the ATM's with my debit card for day to day cash. Only problem I have ever had was this year when they blocked a payment for a flight with Qantas as they thought me booking lots of Aussie hotels and flights all in one day looked a bit suspicious. One phone call off them sorted all that out. I was actually thinking of getting a zero card as well as a backup just in case my Nationwide credit card ever gets blocked while I am away.0 -

However they have taken my complaint seriously, and as a gesture of goodwill, have deposited compensation in my Abbey Zero account.
I would get back onto them and complain. Banks are very sentitive at the moment!0
