thanks Poppysarah, sandraroffey, retrobob and globald
OH is coming to terms with her injury~( had to take some time off from work as the injury is so bad, esp in her hands that she need some rest ) and I'm coming to terms with the fact that the replacement ££'s would come from my pocket. I'm ok with that, but just not happy with this, as I'm about to pay for something which only lasted for 3 months and didn't serve it purpose. Unfrtunately, glass being glass there is no guarantee.
I'm disapppinted, but I guess I have to live with it, right0 -
Has she been the docs of casulty? If she's had time off work she needs to get a medical person to see her wounds and offer advice.0

poppysarah,
after ur advice on saturday, we went to the A & E where she was examined and X rays were taken. there were a few very small pieces of glasses which showed up in th X ray docs removed it.got 8 of them, very tiny pieces, from hands and the back.
gave her some pain killers and some Inj and told us to come back if there is anything. went to the GP's today to get the sick note.
i'm just glad that she only had minor injuries. Can't imagine if anything happened to her eyes. things could have been very complicated.
thank God0 -
I'm pleased you went - You've now got a record of how serious it was AS well as getting the last bits out.
Were neighbouring properties built by the same builders? I'd tell the neighbours if they have similar shower screens - they might all need checking - if only for peace of mind.0 -
you must get in touch with your landlord straght away - in my view this is his responsibility and he must replace this defective fitting. LLs have a duty of care to tenants under Health and Safety legislation.
whether he then claims against the builder is not your concern
write a letter explaining what happened and that she has had to have time off work, hospital visits etc and ask for a new door immediately0 -
clutton - the OP owns the flat, it's not rented
I'd advise pricing a shower screen before calling your home insurance. I've never seen a policy with less than a £50 excess and claiming will also push up the price of your premiums next year. Might be worth just replacing it yourself depending on the cost.0 -
The same thing has just happened to us. The cubicle was installed about 4 years ago. Fortunately no-one was in the bathroom at the time, as I think they would have been seriously injured as the glass is everywhere.
Put me off having a shower, not sure if you can get PVC cubicles?Money SPENDING Expert0 -
Sounds like the builder is trying to be Teflon coated - 'not me mate' syndrome.
but it's the same as when you buy faulty goods from a store, you don't go to the manufacturer but the supplier.
It's the builders responsibility.
I'm with spirit on this one, you have no contract with the people who fitted it so cannot pursue them AFAIK. The builder must make things right, and pursue the fitter themselves.0 -
The exact same thing happened to me on Sunday, I've just posted a thread in the DIY boards asking what the glass should of done. I did nothing but push the screen backwards a little bit, and it completely shattered around me, got a massive wound on my foot and scratches all down my back and legs. My little finger is also cut lots.
We are renting, and have contacted our landlord this morning, yet he made no hints towards offering to replace it himself. I'm sure the way ours shattered meant it wasn't safety glass, its in millions of bits now so I can't check to see if there was the safety kite logo on it, however I think the other flats in this building are installed with the same so I shall ask my neighbour if I can take a look at theirs.trying to become a moneysaving student0 -
Try to find out whether its the same manufacturer as Mellymeep. If you have household insurance you need to contact them immediately, you should have free legal advice as part of the package, they can approach the builders on your behalf and deal with everything. Do you want to sue someone for personal injury. You sure do!! and it should be free through your policy. Seems like everyone want to get out of paying for this one. Don't let them. If its a new build it should be covered the builder NHB policy?
Lastly have you got a sample of the glass, keep some for proof, the glass sounds like its from a defective batch. Lastly why not contact Watchdog, they could give you some advice and there could be others in the same situation as you!!
