shower door panel shattered

not sure if this is the right place, but will give it a go

New built flat with en-suite. moved in 3 months back. owner occupied. shower panel is made of see through glass. OH was taking shower today morning and I heard a loud noise of mirror shattering. went in to see OH standing in a pile of shattered mirrors with blood all over, shocked. apparently she was about to open the panel door to come out after the shower. helped her to get out and cleaned the wounds. there is like atleast 10-12 of them, all minor, but deep cuts.

Now I'm not sure how to go about it. NOT trying to sue ANYONE. need to know how to fix it.is it possible for me to get it done -replace the panel, if yes, whom should I contact? Is there like a warranty or guarantee on these things- the New Built is cover with NHBC and all.

took over 2 hours to clean the bath room with all the small chips every where.any help and suggestions really appreciated, thanks for reading

i would contact the builders from whom you bought the flat ,take some photos of the damage ,
i would imagine this would be something they would have to rectify

Try the DIY board for ideas on replacement.

What a shocking thing to happen. Although you now feel that you don't want to sue, just in case someone is held responsible it may be worth taking photos, of the room and the injuries.

What broke the Mirror or the shower door ?
  • thanks tattoed bum and silvercar

never thought about taking any pix. already was in a !!!!!! mood, on top of OH pain. well the injuries are quite noticeable, thank God nothing happened to her face and eyes.

will try contacting the Builders site manager first thing monday.
does the building insurance or contents insurance cover any of this?

    globalds, just saw ur post.

the shower door panel is made of Glass. and that's what has now shattered into pieces
I dont think it's standard glass. it's like the glass of the car windshield. but when it was all broken , eack of those piece were quite small and could hurt to bleed

Your contents cover would probably cover it but if you've just moved in then I'd be looking to the developer to take responsibilty under your 'snagging' (that's a bit of an understatement in this case!) warranty. I'd expect them to replace it as it's within 2 years and it's certainly not due to wear and tear. How or why a shower door would shatter, I just don't know, that must have been horrible for your OH :(

    Is it a branded product?

That is how it should break.
So at least you know the right type of glass was fitted.
It should be 8mm thick toughened safety.
I would think it was banged into.It is tough but not unbreakable.
Something like a hard body metal shower head hitting it would cause it to break quite easily.
  • thanks Doozergirl- I'm waitng for monday to get in touch with the builders.
not sure about the brand. no names on the panel which I had noticed. but most of the other things in the flat -which were supplied by the builders were all branded.

globalds, it's a shower room with a fixed overhead shower( not the thingy with the telephone cord like extension)
no metal things in the whole shower room. the shower control, again, well fixed to the wall is made of fibre. Unless my OH wanted to really hurt herself( which I doubt) she wouldn't have tried banging her head against the shower door.
and there is enough space( for 2 adults to be in that shower room at the same time, it's not one of those small cublicles, I can vouch for that.

regarding 8mm thickness, I will try to measure it and would let you know later. I understand it's for the job, but when broken hurting people and making deep cuts-one of them too, didn't know that

It can't have to be 8mm thick

I've seen 5mm - 8mm looking very recently. Ideal Standard and Bathstore sell 6mm and they must conform. An 8mm door I know is really high spec and very expensive. If you know where I can get a really nice one cheaply - I'm in the market!

    skyjumper,

Cripes your OH must have had a shock when that happened!

I have a bath/shower panel made from glass. I remember reading up on them before i bought it, they have to have safety glass in. Is there any part of the glass left as it should have the BS kite mark on it to say it complies with this?
Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j

I'd suggest a visit to the walk in centre/casualty - an xray would show no glass is left in ...
