I'm not into TV, but wouldn't a 2nd freeview box be needed, if the OP wanted to record one programme while watching another?
Bearing in mind that it is an analogue recorder.

yes, but the OP stated they wernt bothered about that

Also, connections will become a bit of a nightmare (And a drop in quality probably)

No I don't need to watch the TV if recording, I just would like to set it to record onto VCR or the DVD recorder and then run out of the room! I have an old PACE triangle shape box with just one SCART and then the new one is a Hitachi HDB72 which has two SCART sockets.

You might also like to try the TV connection wizard here:

A diagram is usually easier to follow than a written description...

many thanks aliEnRIK and others. I in desperation called a tv repair man out, (not MSE I know but only cost £15.00) it turns out that DVD recorder is faulty anyway ! no wonder I couldn't suss it out. he has connected TV to record onto VCR/tapes using Hitachi STB at the moment which I didn't know was possible until I sort out another DVD recorder, but thanks to all, will refer to this again for connecting up when I have another DVD recorder.
