i believe i need to get a PAYG sim from another provider and then transfer the number back to orange.

Virgin don't charge and are generally quite efficient at porting in and out, their sims tend to have £5 free credit too which can cover a bit of while you are with them0

how do i get a virgin sim?0

Go into a Virgin shop or wait until one of the Virgin free SIM offers comes around again.
For information, I ported a number out from Orange to Virgin (completed last Monday). Rang Virgin on Thursday to get a PAC number and they issued it straight away. Rang Orange on Friday morning to give them the PAC, so the number will be back on Orange next Friday. Less than 2 weeks turnaround.0 -
I know 3g don't let you bring the number back onto the network within 12 months of you ending your contract even if you go payg then back, so I'd think that there is something similar in place for all the networks. I'd research it more if I was you...0
