Whats better framed or non framed web forwarding ?

Hi everyone ..again :p

Ive gone for a store2go website builder package and im startin to look at it now. ive gone for a premium package which says it has DNS management, so ive been looking on the 123reg site where i brought my domain name and its giving me the option or framed or non framed forwarding and it also says you can just forward to a single page too.

my questions are 1, should i wait until ive finished the site before i forward the address?
2, whats better framed or non framed forwarding? i dont get it. if someone can explain in easy terms for me thatd be fab.

  • In short, non-framed is better, although really you should be changing the DNS settings of your domain to that of your host to avoid the need for forwarding.

Non-framed forwarding means that when someone goes to the web address https://www.myshop.com, their browser will get redirected to your site and the URL of wherever you are hosted will then be displayed in their browser.

Framed forwarding means that the browser will only ever display https://www.myshop.com whilst they are browsing your site which is not good practice for a whole host of reasons

Hi Jamal - I am in a similar situation to baby. I've gone onsite to look at changing the DNS settings of my domain to that of my host to avoid the need for forwarding, as you suggested. But...it looks really complicated and scary! Is there anyway you could explain in laymen's terms how to do it please?
    Regards & thanks!

you need to ask the host for their nameservers, usually ns1.theirdomain.com
    and ns2.theirdomain.com.
you then log into your domain control panel and enter these into the dns settings. they may take a while (ususally a day) to update.
then your domain will direct to your webspace without any forwarding, which is better for seo.

Hi again - sorry having problems. I've gone into 'manage DNS' on 123-Reg and it looks like it's giving me 3 options, ie 'Point to msw.co hosting', 'Point to msw.net hosting' and 'Point to a Virtual Private Servers (VPS)'.

I'm not actually sure where to put the host's nameservers (which I got from them) or if this is the place to put them. Could you help please?

    Regards and thanks!

you need to alter the nameservers rather than the dns settings.
there is a video tutorial here http://www.precisionweb.net/dns/dns_123-reg.htm
although i think it's a bit dated. some 123 reg domains are "locked" so you need to unlock it first (also from your control panel "manage domain locking")

Hi Sunshine - I altered the nameservers and it has worked - I can now access my website by typing in the WWW name - thanks!

However, I seem to have mucked up the email access. Before I did above I could send an email to my business email address and it got through. But now it's not - I tried sending an email from my personal account and keep getting mail delivery failure messages.

When I entered my domain name to register with my host it asked did I want to redirect the entire domain or the website only. I asked for it to redirect the entire the domain which I now think I shouldn't have as my email account is with my host? Is this what's caused the problem and if so can you advise how I can get emails through to my account again? Really sorry to keep bothering you!
    Thanks in anticipation!
    Regards

You need to go into the "Manage DNS" for that domain and alter the MX Records back to 123-Reg:

    Name: mx1.123-reg.co.uk. Priority 20
    Name: mx0.123-reg.co.uk. Priority 10

If you're using mail forwarding go into "Email Forwarding" and check the addresses are setup in there correctly.

    HTH.

Hi Jac1 - thanks to you too for getting back quickly.

Not sure what you mean - are you saying that I have to go back to the beginning again, ie how it was set up before I changed the nameservers as suggested by Sunshine?
    Regards
