Thanks albionrovers and Nigella...just come back to this, as ds has been asking to play wifi on his ds lite again.

It's encouraging to hear that it might work..!

My question is...i I bought this dongle, would the PC's security automatically go back to normal (WPA) as soon as the dongle is removed, or will I have to reconfigure everything each time?

No, why do you think that it would?

WPA or WEP is a property of a wireless network, not of a computer.

Is there a adequate firewall between the PC and all insecure networks that it is connected to?

ok is the dongel an offical 1 or a 3rd party 1 like wifi maX . The official ones are better and there is no need to serch for a acess point with them . We have tried both and the offical one works . This was before we joined sky , we have a netgear router changed to wep from wpa and both the ds and will work no problem . I know in theroy wep can be cracked easier then wpa but we are in the sticks and it still takes time to do so . I personally feel most people can not be bothered to hack into my network when there are unsecured ones up the road , so you could weigh up the risk and do it that way
  • Have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing or otherwise provided the Nintendo DS with an IP address and configured routing? Firewalling may be simpler if you configure your PC as a plain (non-NAT) router, but then you need to configure your other router with a route to your WEP network via your PC - some routers can't do this.

Does the Nintendo DS report a successful wireless connection?

Use Wireshark to observe the traffic between the Nintendo DS and your PC, and between your PC and the internet.

The Nintendo DS wi-fi connection manual implies it requires an access point, is your PC configured as an access point rather than in ad-hoc mode? However don't trust the manual.

Thanks very much for all the advice. I feel this is way over my head and child will just have to stick to playing alone if we can't be sure the computer will be secure enough.

Trouble is, my other offspring uses the wireless connection to access the internet on a laptop, when I'm not around to see to any reconfiguring, and I'm sure it wouldn't get done and we'd all end up with viruses, hackers and Lord knows what.
