Access point for Nintendo DS

Hi,
I am trying to set up an access point so that my DS can connect to my internet connecction. As my broadband uses WPA security i have bought a wireless usb adapter to plug into my main computer.
The idea is that the usb adapter uses WEP security, acts as an access point and so the DS can connect to internet.

However when trying to set it up i still cannot connect the DS. The DS sees the adapters SSID and asks for the WEP key but then fails to connect.

Also in the network connections on my main pc the wireless connection keeps coming up with limited or no connectivity to the internet.

I have tried various configurations of the set up but still no joy.
Has anyone managed this, if so how?
Thanks

Rob

  • you can use WEP or you can use WPA, but you can't use both, unless you create a separate SSIDs. However, not all routers support this. The alternative, if the adaptor will only use WEP is to adjust your router to WEP and accept the potential security risks.

    What router have you got?

    Thanks for the reply.

The router is the orange livebox. This uses WPA (which i dont want to change). This is then connected to my PC using a dlan plug, through the elec wiring.

I was under the impression that i could use a wireless usb adapter as an access point, this has its own SSID, and set the security on this to WEP. Once the device is connected to the adapter it then just uses the PCs internet connection.

Nintendo sell a usb device to do this but as far as i can tell it is just the same as i have bought...i just cant get mine to work!!

Sorry, Just re-read your reply and wanted to clarify. It is the Nintendo DS that can only use WEP so i wanted an access point that used wep then connected to my main broadband connection.

I dont think i can set 2 SSIDs on my router.

what sort of usb adaptor did you get the orginal nintendio or a 3rd party copy
  • I think you new a "router" that you re-configure to be an "access point" in it's setting menu and then that will work, that's what I have done before but as an extender for my wifi.

Would that not have the same effect as changing your current router from WPA to WEP and therefore downgrading your wireless security?

    To answer the questions...

It is not the nintendo usb adapter, just a standard wireless adapter.

I have tried setting it as an access point in the settings and can see its SSID on the DS but still cant connect to the internet.

Yes, it probably will effecively downgrade my security to WEP, but only while the adapter is plugged into the PC (i.e only when i want to connect the DS to the Internet), and once set up i wont have to keep going in and out of my main router settings and changing everything. Well that is if i can actually get it set up though!

Hello, I've just been looking at the same problem. We have a Sky broadband router for wireless internet + I was hoping this usb adapter which you can buy would just plug in and temporarily downgrade the security whilst my son is playing wifi with his DS lite.

Amazon reviews for an "unofficial" dongle (£7.95) and the official Nintendo one (£27.95) suggest that the cheaper one won't work properly. Question is, is it worth risking £27.95 just in case the official one works?

I paid the 27-99 because I have WPA and, after a few firewall issues (dont use ZoneAlarm, the dongle doesn't like it, I now use windows firewall) it works every time, even in the next room.
