It may very well contain a 'rootkit' which could/would be used by them for marketing purposes - check the terms and conditions very, very carefully.
I would be very, very surprised if this was the case with Pinecone. One or two other survey companies perhaps, but not Pinecone. If anything I would be more inclined to suspect it would be something to do with protecting the privacy of their images. They are very security conscious...Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -
I don't want to download anything either. I use Firefox and don't want any problems with it. Other survey companies seem to send videos no problem, without having to download anything. If enough people don't download it, then perhaps they'll have a rethink..... or even just send us basic surveys.
There won't be a shortage of people downloading it, though. There's always a long line of people wanting to join Pinecone. And they've always been ruthless about booting people off their books.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -

I've just disabled the plug in and Firefox now works fine, I'll just have to remember to enable it again when I get a survey."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -

Thanks for that, but I'm still not very happy about downloading it and if they boot me off their surveys, too bad. I don't feel I should have to download anything.Don't wait for the storm to pass

Well I am glad I am not the only one with the same problem- even rebooted and reran loads of spyware...adaware....etc incase it was my computer!
I can see others here have said it is "the end" of pinecone for mac users/vista users but think thats jumping the gun abit- can see why your saying this but if this many people are having problems, then the actual people forfilling the surveys will be a minority- they will not be including mac or vista users and would imagine that by not allowing certain groups of people, the results of said surveys will not be as thorough and inpartial, making pinecone not a good place for researchers to gain survey results. I think for that reason I will wait to see if this is really a way for pinecone to keep down numbers/change participants. Don't panic! its not over till the fat lady sings!0 -
I'm another Mac user who is worried about this turn of events. As someone said above, there will still be loads of people willing to download it, who still use windoze... and it seems a lot of these companies don't really care about getting a genuine cross-section of participants, at least not if it doesn't suit their needs. I think they'll be happy enough to let us go, and that's rotten for me cos I only joined a couple of months ago.
Has anyone actually contacted them about it?0 -
I emailed them, only today though so no reply just yet...0

Let us know what they say. I'm a macuser and have only just joined. I was looking forward to doing the surveys.0 -
when will companies realise they need to work across platforms?!0

This piece of software that you have to download does actually work on Mac but it looks as though Pinecone decided not to pay for a license fee for Mac version so they've decided that it's not cost effective.0
