thankyou
My Ma is a veggie so not much help there, but the fish stall on Bury market was always good. I will ask little sis (still in Suffolk) whats goin on in Bury meat wise;)
Shooting or catching your own has to be the best option round those parts! Dad's tactical 'roadkill' pheasant, my naughty school pals mum's snared rabbits, their homegrown pig...
Have you looked on https://www.rivercottage.net as i think Hugh F-W has a list of butchers/farms on there.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Have been watching this thread with interest and decided to pop into one of the butchers in town - was rushing and not really paying attention and just asked for a 1lb of mince. Left a minute later with my purse £4.70 lighter and very confused. I would love to go to the butchers for all my meat but really cant afford to at that price, 1lb of mince only lasts for 1 evening meal in our houseJoined slimming world Feb 2010

I stock up when my butcher has special offers on. Minced beef is £5 for 4lbs, the quality is excellent as the mince is made in front of you from a joint of beef, when it is cooked no fat comes off it. Would never buy supermarket meat tastes horrible.0

Perhaps snob was the wrong word, i apologise.
However i stand by my point that there are people, maybe not here, that look down their noses at the supermarkets and make wild claims such as "Oh i wouldn't ever set foot in a supermarket!" However its important to remember that it was the Smarket revolution of the 50's/60's that brought new products to the masses that would previously never have made it in to Arkwrights "open all hours" corner shop!
This 'modernisation' of food has changed the way we all look at food and think about food. We would never have made the exciting recipies in the cookbooks of tv chefs of today if supermarkets were not around to stock lychee's or saffron. So while the meat may not be hung for 20 days or the cheese ripened for 12 months, thats not to say that with skilled cooking and exotic ingredients you cant create a wonderful meal for a good price.Come to my garden in South Bucks and i'll find you a wasp...0 -
I recently bought meat from morrisons supermarket. It was excellent - and decent value for money. I personally thought it was better than some i had seen in tesco although i shop in a tesco store that hasn't got any 'freah' counters). I would recommend checking out your local store - especially if you havn't found a local butcher.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0

Wow did he mince fillet steak?
My butcher charges £1.80 per lb for steak mince or 2lb for £3..no fat no water just decent mince that tastes great.0 -
My Nana is always on at me to use the Butchers over Tesco's but (this will sound so dumb) I shy away from using the butchers and grocers as I never know how much to ask for. Whereas in the supermarkets I can just pick up the right size packet.0

exactly, its convenience over so-called quality. For a younger working generation (im gonna get in trouble for saying this) who don't have the time to plan meals and tootle off to the butcher the supermarket represents the best option.Come to my garden in South Bucks and i'll find you a wasp...0

OMG!! That sounds like a right rip off merchant. I pay £1.99 for a kilo from my butcher and he minces fresh stewing steak or braising steak right in front of me so I can see I am not getting any rubbish.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
