I buy my meat from the local butcher because I know where it comes from, I know that I'm getting good quality meat for my money. The butcher I use has won umpteen awards and is a Q guild butcher. I pay around £3.30 for just over a pound of steak mince. £1.40 for gluten free sauasages, about 6 small ones. Around £4.30 for a 1.9 kg chicken. His prices are good for what you get. I used to buy organic mince from Tesco but after reading OS for a while, I decided to use butcher instead and haven't gone back to supermarket meat since. He has a great selection of sausages, burgers, bacon, etc etc and I'd much rather buy from them than from Tescos now.

  • I wish I could find a decent butcher in my area. There doesnt seem to be any around here.
I just looked on the Q Guild website and you're right, there don't seem to be any in your area. There's one in Ipswich and one in Woodbridge, but I imagine that's much too far to go for meat!

A good butcher doesn't have to be a member of the Q Guild though.Ask around,a personal recommendation is a good sign.

Yeh Ipswich and Woodbridge are about 50 miles away!! There is a butcher round the corner from me but he seems to only sell the very cheap cuts of meat and nothing else. I suppose I could order from him though

Aren't there any good butchers nearer Lowestoft? What about Beccles or Halesworth?

It's not just supermarkets you have to be wary about though. I have just come back from a large car boot sale and there is always a 'butchers van' there - the ones where they tell you the incredibly low prices via their headset :) Now I've only once bought meat from one of these vans - many years ago when a friend told me it was fantastic meat etc - never again!.

My mum also informed me that she once went to that boot sale when it opened at 8 and all his meat was still frozen! He was also giving cooking tips aout his rumpsteak like "it's better cooked in the oven than in a frying pan" My mum was wandering round saying useful comments like "that's because it's such poor quality it's not fit for frying anyway" :rotfl: I believe that it's all foreign meat, though not sure where from.

You will have to eat fish LOL;)
I know what it's like, I'm from Suffolk, Bury in fact. Bleak empty hollow of a county, not at all like lovejoy! I lived on the 'plains'!

I rather buy from a butcher as I like to support local businesses rather than line mr big supermarket owner's pockets.

Also I know things about a major supermarket's meat that would make your hair curl, but for legal reasons I cannot say.

does no one buy meat from the supermarket then? I do and it seems to me that the meat ailes are the busiest in the shop, however the meat counter at supermarkets is always deserted. this strikes me as odd since what is the difference buying from a supermarket meat counter and buying it from a butcher?

There does seem to be a great deal of snobbery on this thread about the quality of supermarket meat. Whats the matter with supermarkets? The meat is just as good as anywhere. Its not exactly going to cause you to grow three legs is it?

But I dont buy fruit and veg from them either. I dont consider the supermarket as the FIRST point of call for anything at all.

Wasn't there a programme on one time presented by Nick Knowles about takeaways etc buying suspect meat that hadn't been inspected etc.
