We live in North Enfield close to Hertfordshire border. Enfield is very close to M25 and despite having no tube stations in Enfield we have a good service into Moorgate and Liverpool street. It's also one of the greenest boroughs in London. Like all Towns we have good and bad neighbourhoods. If you want to move a little further out, maybe consider Hertford. It's lovely.
  • Thanks for everyones thoughts. Guildford certainly seems a possibility, especially if Woking is rough. I know we need to go down and have a look around but that won't happen for a while. It's good to get people's thoughts though so we have an idea where to start.

One thing I like about Guildford is that you can actually get a small 2 bed house for the money rather than a flat which certainly appeals. Obviously these may be in not such nice ends of the town (as any large town has) but it's nice to have the option! Thanks

Even parts of Chatham are actually very nice!
Not the £200,000 parts you keep going on about. Medway also has some of the worst schools in the country for those who fail the 11+. It really is a dump, and I couldn't wait to escape.
    Been away for a while.

I don't know Guildford that well, but I think that the north area (GU2?) is significantly cheaper than GU1. I was surprised to see 3 bed detached houses for under £250k in that area (2007 prices), as you would be hard-pressed to get more than a 2 bed flat for that amount in the better parts of the town.

Woking is one of those places that I would describe as being 'rough by Surrey standards'. As someone has already mentioned it is not a nice place for a night out, but it is just chavs rather than anything sinister or dangerous. I'd go for Guildford out of the two every time, but Woking provides a quicker and cheaper commute and cheaper rental prices which could add up to a useful saving.

GU2 area will probaby be cheaper as it's near the University, likely to have student neighbours who will probably be a bit noisier than anyone who was there as a family/couple. It would give added potential of renting the place out fairly easily though.

Surprised that there has not been more comment on Sussex. A few years ago I moved to the South East and as my parents lived in Surrey (Bookham) this was the natural starting point. Soon became apparent that I couldn't afford it and then started to look at Sussex. Haywards Heath is great but we lived in Burgess Hill and had the most fantastic 3 years before moving back North.

It has great communter links (I know the train is busy,as has been mentioned), great soprts facilities, pubs and the downs. Not to mention Brighton and the coast 20 minutes away and access to Gatwick airport.

Would move back in a heartbeat!
