Internet Explorer - Not Responding.....constantly!

Hi there

i hope someone can give me a bit of advice. I work on a Compaq Laptop which i have had for a couple of years now, the operating system is Vista. Just recently when i click on the IE icon to open up the internet (we are on Broadband with virginmedia) it starts to opens up the page and then after about 10 seconds i get a "not responding" message and it stalls with nothing coming up on the pages at all. Sometimes it does get a little bit further along, for example i may get my "google" and "yahoo" toolbars download - but no actual pages ever download. I then have to close the page down (or start task manager) and try again. It is taking more and more attempts to actually get a page to open up. Currently it takes about 5 or 6 goes before i can get online.
I have got a couple of free antivirus programes - AVG and Malwarebytes Antivirus, and i run Windows Defender scan weekly and so far nothing suspect has been picked up. Problem been going on for a couple of weeks and its driving me mad. Is there anything i can do to try and eradicate this?
any help will be gratefully received.
thanks

  • Try : Start/All programs/Accessories/System tools/Internet explorer (no add ons). I've found that the more toolbars/add ons loaded into IE the more likely it is to slow/stall/crash and just generally mess up.

Also, always a good idea to have Firefox or another browser installed.
  • Have you tried, Tools, Internet Option from within IE, Advanced, Reset Internet Explorer Settings, Click OK at the prompt.

  • This is an ongoing problem with FlashPlayer, Java, and quite possibly Google Toolbar. What helped (though hasn't completely cured) for me was to uninstall Flash using the adobe tool (http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157) then re-install Flash as administrator (by opening IE as Admin), ensure Java is completely up-to-date and remove (using Add/Remove Programs) all previous versions, then disable all your toolbars.
I exported my Google Bookmarks to My Documents as a .BMK file and imported the folder to IE Favourites which I then dragged to the IE Links bar, so I still have the Bookmarks there.
    Hope this helps.

Either a 'plugin' is conflicting with Internet Explorer (Flash for example)
    Or your machines infected

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
SCAN and post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else but scan and post the log)

  • Give this a whirl there is a line in you log that worries me. This should clear it and expose others if they are hiding;

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • ALso just to say - i have now done as suggested by Reluctant Spender and Danmanchester - and got rid of ALL toolbars by resetting IE to manufacturers settings...............and so far, so good. Shut it down and opened it up twice so far with no stalling.........think those toolbars are just a complete pain basically.
thanks so much for your help.
