Virgin mobile broadband faster than T Mobile.

This is a strange one. I'm with VM for my home broadband and they're doing mobile broadband for a fiver (1GB) for existing customers, so I decided to go for it, as you get 28 days to cancel if you change your mind.

I also got a T Mobile dongle (3GB) for £15 a month, as I was interested in the unlimited wifi access at their hotspots. They give seven days to cancel.

The idea was to test the speeds and decide if the extra tenner a month was going to be worth it for the wifi access. I then found out that Virgin use the T Mobile network, so the speeds should technically have pretty much been the same. However, the Virgin connection has been consistently quicker than T Mobile, up to ten times quicker in a couple of instances, with TM going at less than dial up speed, while Virgin running at 3-5mbps in exactly the same location.

I quizzed TM about this and they said that Virgin does use their network but they didn't know why they'd be slower than Virgin. It's a shame because I'd decided the free wifi would be useful enough to warrant the extra money, but 90% of my time would be spent using the dongle during lunch when no wifi is available, but TM is useless on that front.

Anyone else experienced anything similar having used both networks? Are there any reasons as to why this might be happening? It looks like the TM dongle will have to go back.
