I use the Shell Citibank card for almost all purchases. My experience of driving between East Anglia and London is that Shell are the cheapest for diesel anyway if you carefully follow their sneaky price changes. Sometimes East London Shell garages are as cheap as Norfolk ones. Sometimes not. Sometimes the Norfolk Shells are all about the same, sometimes not, and you have to seek out which of a possible three in the area have been selected to be the cheapest for that month. But the 3% certainly beats the last penny or two anyway. It has been this way for perhaps three years now. The nearest fuel pump to my home is at the cheapest Asda in East London (the one they show on tv news when Asda gets reported as making a "market-leading fuel price drop". I never use it for fuel :p

You can also supposedly get Shell Drivers Club points doubled up (or similar) if you use the Shell Citibank card and the Shell Drivers Card on the same purchase, but Shell Drivers Club (the successor to Shell Pluspoints) is absolutely appalling at points statement keeping and I would recommend no-one relies on it. They dont reply to my emails when I tell them what's wrong. They seem to have lost thousands of my points and are keeping schtum ...

As for other cashback cards, I read somewhere this week about a 1.5% cashback card, but I recall deciding it required quite a large spend to qualify, and I instantly then forgot who was offering it:-)

By the way, Egg is of course Citibank thesedays.

    Hi all

I have an Egg Money credit card which I pay off in full every month, and use mainly because of the cashback on it. However with the 4% interest available on a positive balance I am considering moving my Egg savings into it, and would like to get another cashback card to use instead.

I don't understand why you need another card. I believe you will still get the 1% cashback even if the account has a credit balance. So, move your savings and continue to use the card as usual. I'm sure I read this on another thread but I have not confirmed directly with Egg.

The money spent each month would only earn an equivalent 2% AER with Egg, assuming a linear spend profile.

It's better, therefore, to switch to another 1% cashback card to make 4% AER on Egg Money whilst enjoying up to 56 days interest free on the new cashback card.

OK, I see your point - thanks. I thought the OP thought he would not get the 1% cashback because the card was in credit.
  • I hadn't noticed that. One other thing is that in order to keep the cashback ongoing you have to make a Shell fuel purchase each month (which is probably why I hadn't noticed the future purchases thing). My cashback from the previous month is always credited to the current month's statement. I just use the Shell card for where Amex isn't accepted.

Not quite, you still continue to earn cashback if you don't make any purchases in the month, however I think after 6 months if you haven't made any Shell purchases then the rebat begins to expire.

Thanks. Had a skycard a few years back. At that time you had to build up £500 worth of points to claim £5 off your sky account, rather than it coming off each month. Not sure if this is still the same or not, but I think I'll go with the Shell card as it will definitely give me more £££ back :)

Egg doesn't come off each month. you only get it once a year!
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Well it would mean I'm not benefitting from the "upto 50 days free credit" and therefore have less in my savings earning interest.
More importantly though, I would find it harder to keep track of how much I am actually spending on the card, which could cause me to wipe out all the benefits of having the 4% AER :rotfl:

Have applied for the Shellcard today, and now realise that Egg is part of Citibank. Hope I still get accepted!

You only have to make a shell purchase once every 6 months to redeem the cashback

I plan to do the same. But as I have asked on another forum, is there an upper limit on credit balances?
