We do need a car, no car no work, We do live in a remote village yes, and work is in an even remoter village.

Having lived in this situation I can sympathise. I have relatives to whom I cannot get by public transport at all (no car at the mo.)

But on your sort of income a new or even nearly new car was not a good idea.

And if you could get a little motorcycle or something now, you could drasticlaly cut the amount you are paying on fuel, immediately and possibly on insurance.

Also plan you journeys like a military campaign. If DS is picking me up we arrange it to fit with another run that she has to make or she fits other jobs to do with the kids and shoppping round picking me up - cutting the number of journeys to one third.

You haven't answered all my questions. Why can't you cycle to work - it's only ten miles? Can you car share, either walking to meet the person so they don't go out of their way or making a contribution to the petrol costs (may well be grateful as we are all feeling the pinch)? I didn't ask what the phones were, I asked if you needed three phones for two people?

When does the childcare contract end? Can you give one or two months notice stating that you are on a DMP? Why are you spending an average of £50 a month that you don't have on gifts? Can't you agree with your family just to buy for kids, then a card and a homemade cake or truffles for an adult?

What we are all saying is that you have enough money coming in for essentials and to pay off your debts but you are choosing to spend it on luxuries. There is always a good reason why we 'need' this or 'need' that, but you cannot afford it. Something has to go - the childcare, the car or the TV, mobile phones and internet connection.

I know it does, but what? If I'm looking to get my PC repair work of the ground I need the mobile, I need the car to collect the PC's, I need the internet for drivers and the rest, so its the childcare, but then its paid for anyway in tax credits, if it goes so does about £160 a month? Its so hard to know what to do to do right.

PS For cycling... I'm a lard a$$ :( Don't have a bike, well the son has a Power Ranger one, I'm sure he'd lend me that.

Me again- well that £30 mobile reduction will be a good start and if you can make some money off of survey/click sites- even better and some people do free scratchcards on (bingo?) sites that can be profitable too so all good steps in the right direction. If it turns out that your ladywife working is costing you money and she decides to stay at home- she could maybe become a childminder herself? You know only too well how much they are needed and it could put some much needed money your way.

The phone can go right enough, should get about £120 for it.

So this business is going to cost you £250 a month for the car, say £10 a month for credit on the mobile phone and £15 a month for the internet connection, how many computers will you have to repair to make that amount of money? Do you have enough free time or people living locally (as you live in a remote location) to make this business viable?

Well done for getting rid of the other mobile phone, have you given a months notice on the contract yet? If you are going to keep the broadband then make it work for you, by doing surveys etc. If you can't make it pay for itself then it really should go. Can you switch to one of the new £6 broadband connections?

Also you didn't answer my question about the childminder contract? I think your partner going back to childminding is a great idea. She could even do her current job alongside it once the later shifts become available.

Didn't answer as I don't know to be honest, the missus know all them details. If i just had a decent paying job, Infact its not really the job as such more the area I live in, I've checked out Jobcentreplus website and a similar job in England earns approx £9 per hour, I'm on £5.65, quite a difference, its the same with all jobs around here, they all pay peanuts whether your educated or not, maybe why our little town came top in the unemployment blacklist for the entire UK,

  • I have had a few different jobs in my time, including bank clerk, waitress, photographer and then occupational psychologist, the hardest job I ever had was when I was a child minder. You earn every penny and have such responsibility, looking after money was one thing but looking after someones children wow!!
    Respect :A
