My local jobcentre refered me to a scheme called wheels to work, where they provide a scooter for a small fee, they run similar schemes all over the country, yes its not a car but its a way to get to work.

I very much doubt they will fund your driving licence, they may pay for your test if you already had lessons and the cost of the test was the only thing holding you back, otherwise everybody in a rural area would be asking

We have wheels 2 work round here as well. I thought about it before I bought a car. They'll only give you a 50cc bike but its better than nothing. £5 a month I believe, including your CBT, insurance, helmet, leathers and the bike. You just pay petrol.

I'm not surprised at your situation. Here in Cumbria at least we have a bus service to the nearest bigger town. Only £10 return, and 4 services a day! Bargain! The government still doesn't seem to understand rural communities.

i would definately get the small scooter thing, with loads of warm waterproof clothing, then when job comes up, yes, i have transport.

main problem is that it sounds like you may need to transport your children to and from school if you worked, whereas now you walk, you cant do this in a scooter (or are they old enough to do this?)

then, when you have a job, you have not only learned road sense and some rules of the road, you will have earned a bit of money to start your proper driving lessons.

you can apply for your provisional licence and take th etheory test before you do your practical lessons, you can get fairly cheap books and dvds to help you with this, BUT ou need to pass the practical test within 2 years of the theory pass or you need to re do it.

the other way around it is to see if you can get a social security loan.

in addition, i would use your local MP you would be surprised at what a 'name' can achieve, use the MP to express your disatisfaction at local transport services in the area, citing your own personal situation, jobless, simplly due to lack of transport, how is he and the local council going to get you off the jobless numbers, how is he and the council going to get your children out of poverty, how he is he and the local council going to get your children living with and experiencing the work ethic, go to the papers too, a local driving instructor may be generous to get good publicity

good luck, you need to be loud and assertive about this

Oh and don't forget the DVLA will be happy to take £50 off you for printing a bit of paper and making a photocard, before you even start!
