You can set a future date for anything you want to pay by BACS up to 12 months in advance with HSBC and there is a hefty fee for stopping cheques.

But you can't send a BACS payment through the post, you can't pay the Indian takeaway with BACS or Visa as many takeaways do not accept Debit/Credit Cards, sorry but the benefits of having access to a cheque will not fade away with time, we will still need them and more so will business.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

My diet is fine, I enjoy an Indian Takeaway every so often - not every day as you are incorrectly implying - get your facts straight first.
You got a problem that you want to address Stanton (Pascal Case)?

But as technology improves, and the cost reduces (which is likely to happen, given time), your local Indian takeaway will be able to accept debit and credit cards. Cheques still exist now, because now, these places cannot take cards. But give it time, and I am sure they will.

Agreed, once GPRS or EDGE enabled Hand-Held POS is made affordable and reliable.

    Exactly :)

And that time will come, probably in the not too distant future.

Just charge the card at the actual restaurant. Works for Dominos and, uh, every take out I've ever known.

Cheque is especially dumb for these situations anyway - give food, take cheque, bank cheque, cheque bounces.

Now what? Go back to the property? What if they refuse to pay? Small claims court? For £15?

What is so special about sending cheques through the post. It is just a piece of paper.

As for the Indian takeaway why not pay in cash. I know that HSBC are going to withdraw the cheque guarantee and I think that the others have or are going to withdraw it so the cheque is a meaningless piece of paper unless you have the money in your account.

What technology improvements are needed? The current system is fairly simple to operate.

No, they won't. They use them now because they're an existing system more than anything. And there's plenty of evidence to suggest most businesses would like to move away from them, just look at all of the major retailers that already have.

They're also incredibly expensive for businesses, writing and receiving. You think they'd still be interested if you gave them the ability to process ad-hoc "one off" direct debits from an account, in the same fashion as a card terminal, for a significantly lower fee?

As has been said an exhausting number of times: business is business, it is not underpinned by cheques. Take them out of the equation and people will just pay by bank transfer or use cards more.
