LHA - Changing borough - how long must you live in the borough?

Are you allowed to claim LHA for a borough that you don't currently live in.

E..g you are currently living in the council of x and want to move to the council of y - does it matter?

I heard a while ago that you had to be living in the borough/ council for at least six months before you could claim from that particular borough.

So if I move to a new borough, and then apply for LHA, I would have only been living there (in that borough) for one day - would I be allowed to claim lha?

Many thanks

Yes you are, there's no rule for you to stay in any area for a fixed period of time, only if you were to apply for Local Authority housing.

Probably not relevant in your case, I heard of a tenant that was told if she gave up her tenancy in her Local Authority property and moved to the private sector, the LHA would be reduced, unless there were exceptional circumstances for the move.

you can claim from day one for any borough you live in - you cannot claim for a borough you do not live in.
  • Thats good to know.

I wonder where on earth I got this 6 months qualifying period from!!? Perhaps this was for the old hb?
