Hi,
We have lots of Ikea bedroom furniture atm which is Birch.
My son wants Oak in his room but when we visited Ikea, all the display Oak Malm and Pax was a very orangey colour. When the drawers are new out of the box they look the right colour so believe the furniture has 'aged' to the orangey colour.
I know the Birch furniture darkens with time and daylight but I was wondering how anyone else had found the Oak?
Thanks;)

I've had the oak Malm furniture as a tenant and it hasn't ever appeared orangey. I visited Ikea this past wkend to price up a few bits of the Malm and their display also didn't appear orange. I'm guessing the display you seen was a one off problem?
I am gutted that they appear to have discontinued the Malm wardrobe's in favour of the Pax though. The Malm one was nice and chunky but the Pax that you have to coordinate with is a bit namby pamby! Still gonna get the bedside drawers, chest of drawers and the Pax wardrobe mind. It's really sturdy stuff, even after I've built it!"a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessaries and conveniences of life than it is possible for any savage to acquire."0 -

Got several bits of oak from ikea, including the malm drawers. deffo more like the second image there - agree that the ones you saw may have been one-offs or under strong lighting etc.0

The one from ebay has had it's frame painted brown so I wonder if they've also altered the doors in some way. Varnished it maybe?"a workman, even of the lowest and poorest order, if he is frugal and industrious, may enjoy a greater share of the necessaries and conveniences of life than it is possible for any savage to acquire."0 -

We have Malm in Oak bedside tables for 6 months. Sister has same and drawers. Definitely no orange colour at all! We have just been to our local Ikea - what a hellhole!!! Southampton - possibly the worst designed store / parking ever!!!!
Bought some more Malm in Oak drawers for ourselves. 4 drawer set - took partner 2 hours to put first together and second set 1 hr 15 mins. No mistakes on either set - I was very pleased - he was pleased that he followed instructions and got them both right!! Argos flatpack is a nightmare!
Absolutely brilliant drawers - hold loads of stuff and a lot of weight and smooth action. They will last. We were gonna get a Malm bed but after seeing it and the "overhangs" that feet could easily get caught on we thought better of it.
Saving for a Malm wardrobe now - £235 is OK for the size and sliding doors although the door holders were a bit rubbish but I think Sothampton Ikea stuff has been put together by the monkeys - IOW - the staff!!! A bigger bunch of morons I have yet to find.
Employing a South African as "security / door police" is never a good idea. Actually employing a south African is not. Are these people universally obnoxious? Every single white south African person I have ever met is the most conceited, arrogant person. But my sister, who is a nurse tells me a black SA doctor is the same. I conclude that people from SA are rude, arrogant, obnoxious idiots with the stupidest aaaacccceeent in the world. Maybe that's why?? HTH0 -
Just to qualify my last post about the South African "door police" - this was BEFORE we had even got into the store and after taking an hour to get in and park and then cue up in a staggered cattle system - even though it wasn't necessary. She acted as if she was riot police - before gaining entry to a shop where you are going to spend money!!
I would have asked to see the manager. But it is Ikea after all. Who is the manager? Do they care?
That is why mine, and others experiences with South Africans is universally bad.
This isn't an anti SA initial post but an IKEA MALM post - just venting my displeasure about the store.:T0 -
I think some of the staffing issues are universal and not restricted to SA's.
On Monday, our store had 'lost' 42 sets of shelves. They said they would investigate their whereabouts (following a 30 mile round trip). I phoned today, still lost but still showing as in stock on the website.0 -

No - I didn't mean this to be an anti SA post - just venting my general anger. You are right - the website and stock info needs to be looked at as does staff training and awareness. However at all my times shopping at Ikea - 15 years the staff and customer service level has remained exactly the same. Very poor!! We nearly abandoned our trip to the new local Ikea as the things we wanted were showing up as out of stock online and phone - checked at last minute and they were in - hence the hell like experience.
If they stocked everything online, and charged reasonable postage I would forego stepping foot in the place ever again. Some of the things we wanted - like crockery and cutlery was poor quality and vastly overpriced. Impulse buys? Only impulse was to get exactly what we had come for.... and then spend 45 minutes queing to have the pleasure to pay for it.
Definitely not a good shopping experience. And I wouldn't know when the best time to go is. Early - evryone else has same idea. Late - knowing their excellent CS you would be waiting in line for an hour to be told the shop was shutting, come back 2moro!!
No yellowing though!!! LOL0 -
I've got 2 sets of malm oak chest of drawers and 2 x bedside tables. Have had them for about 3 years and definately no orange colour change.
I have had problems with the drawers themselves though with the bases falling out. Learned to live with that now though and don't put too much weight in them.0
