when you think that you have to either burn or eat less so you create a surplus of calories to the value of 3500 calories per week to loose just ONE pound of fat you are doing amazing Maz. Even when you were on approx 800 cals a day for that first week

1200 per day x 7 = 8400 calories so only 2 pounds and a bit..means you must have been burning some serious calories doing exercise etc

  • Isn't the daily recommended amount of calories for women around 2000? If so isn't only having 800 really dangerous?

within the confines of a very low calorie diet on a nutritionally balanced programme with proper support, and depending on how overweight a person is in the first place whether it's the right route to go down....

so if you were only having 800 calories per day and the recommended amount is 2000 that would give you 1200 per day that you are not using (so your nody would have to burn fat from you to make up that amount). so over a week 1200 x 8 would mean your body would need to burn 8400 calories of your own body fat alone which equates to 2 pounds in weight loss. Each pound weight loss you need to burn 3500 calories (either through extra exercise or through eating less which is what you are doing by having 800 cals)

does that make sense or still clear as mud?

  • I think I'm following you both, it's just 800 a day sounds like a scarily low amount of food to be eating. I remember once when I was really skint and was only eating once a day, I worked out it was around 500 calories a day. I lost a stone and was really ill.

its probably my calculation hang on

2000 (cals needed per day) - 800 (amount of calories you are eating) = 1200 calories which your body isn't getting in food so has to burn off as fat from your body

1200 x 7 (number of days per week) = 8400 calories which your body isn't getting per week in food so burns off in fat

3500 calories per week needed to burn 1 pound of fat
you are burning 8400 (amount you are burning) /3500 = 2.4 so 2 and a bit pounds
