It sounds like you would be better off seeing if one of the agencies you contacted will help you sort out a debt management plan (DMP) for the time being - I'm no expert but I am sure a DMP would be fairly quick to get up and running, and you can always consider other options like IVAs a few months down the line when things have calmed down a bit. It also means the agency would do the hard graft of working out pro-rata payments, and would give you a sample letter to send to all your creditors with an initial token amount to tide them over before the DMP kicks in. The agency would also be there to give you advice on dealing with the inevitable stroppy phone calls and letters. Don't try and do it all yourself - there's help out there, grab it. And happy birthday for tomorrow - you do have cause to celebrate because you are now starting to take control of your situation.
One life - your life - live it!

Hope I haven't come across as too harsh. I have every sympathy with your position, but you've made a big step with your SOA and you need to focus on some small victories to help you get through the financial stuff.
  • God bless, you will be ok. My ex did a flit when DD 3 months old and on maternity leave no pay. You will get through AND be happier and better off.

    Stick with it.

  • thanks everyone for your thoughts on soa. i have already made tracks into cutting down on things, was bad time for him to leave right on top of christmas and clearing the account before he went so alot of things were in arrears including gas and electricity so having to start in a minus position with most things. am hoping in 30 minutes time i will not just be a year older but a year wiser too. on thursday i will get back to the number crunching and see just what i can make out of this mess. i think i deserve a day off especially on my birthday. i will grab the best looking budget i have been given and will send a begging letter to everyone to try and get interest stopped/frozen and offer a pro rata figure and take it from there. i am right in thinking that i can use any agencies budget and any agencies letters but still have no other contact with them, but to do it myself??? or if i use their budgets/letters do i then need to go on a dmp with that agency??
  • You are fine to use the documentation from the agencies and then do it yourself, just make it clear you are doing it youself and that they have to deal with you (ie remove any reference to them as running the DMP)

Happy birthday for a minutes time

Hi I don't know if this will help but try having a declutter and put your old junk (sorry preloved momentoes) on ebay, Amazon, Green Metropolis or whereever. It might bring in a few pennies to help the budget.
Daily clicks could be a small way to help (theres a link somewhere)
The old style board is a goldmine for cutting the budget but watch it as there is so much useful and interesting stuff you could loose half a day in there.
    Hope this helps.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)
  • Happy Birthday, I hope today is brighter than yesterday.

    best wishes and hugs
