AA car insurance renewal - always phone them!

I got my car insurance renewal quote today from the AA and I was shocked to find it had gone up by about 20 quid or so.
It was £346.87.
I have been driving 13 years, been with the AA for 6, never claimed, no points on my licence low value car (1997 Astra 1.6 ) so I couldn't understand why the quote was so high. it was for comprehensive cover.
So I did a quote online to check on THEIR website and it came out a £202.40
I phoned them to query it and I was ready to walk and go elsewhere so I was confident I could try and get the best I could.
After a little talking to the guy, I got him to pull up my online quote and he said he had to go and speak with the retentions department as I kept saying it was a really uncompetitive quote.
Little while later he comes back and authorises the quote I received online, so I have saved nearly £145 on this years car insurance! Plus I got protected no claims as well which I didn't have before!
So it shows you gotta haggle these days or you'll get taken for a ride.
Just thought I'd share.....

I did this with my AA car insurance last year. Renewal came through very high considering no claims etc. Got an online quote which was quite a bit cheaper and rang them. They matched it.
I have just done the same with house insurance (also with AA) and this came out £6 cheaper online. Only a small amount but it all helps.0 -

Can anyone tell me why some people think other people will be interested in how much they're paying for car insurance?0 -
Well,
For starters this is a money saving site, right? so I saved some money and I wanted to make sure people don't pay the renewal price and always check when they renew.
I said my quote figures as an example.
Can anyone tell me why some people always make snide comments on other peoples threads.

Pipe down, it was a genuine question.
I know it's a money saving site, but some people are quite happy to pay what they're asked to pay based on the cover they're given or the fact that they've made a claim and the claim was settled to their satisfaction.
The truth is that no-one has any idea what they're paying for until they need to use it.0 -

i'm not sure that's a fair reflection of how people feel
People pay the renewal price for various reasons - because they're either lazy, not very astute financially, short of time etc etc - but not because they're happy to pay over the odds! the insurance companies are effectively hoping that customers don't look into this shady practise of theirs
As it's a money saving website then it's a good thing that people like th OP makes posts like this to highlight how much being lazy etc can cost customers.0 -

is that really true?? I think not
And what is your claim example all about??

I definately agree with op. Me and oh just did exactly same with admiral and saved a bit of money. Sharing any money saving tips etc is the whole point of this website and sometimes its the most obvious things that people dont do or know about. So posting is the best way to let others know.
Woohoo to getting anything cheaper !!!!!!:j"Opportunity only knocks once.It doesnt knock, knock again, then leave a note asking you to give it a call back when you've got your s*** together".John Connolly0 -
The best AA could do for my Mum was take off 10%, it had gone up so much, so to save hassle she just went with them.
I just saved £200 by switching to new insurers, their so cheeky how much they go up and they change everyday!0 -
As far as I know the AA don't provide the claim service, they don't pay out for claims, so all they're doing is recommending what someone else will provide often solely on the basis of price. Since when did the cheapest of anything also guarantee quality?
My claim example becomes pretty straightforward once you understand this basic concept.0 -
I can't understand why anyone in their right mind would give more business to a company who was willing to drop their price by over £100 to retain business. Why was the price so high to start with.Top Tip is £450 away from clearing the overdraft and being debt free0
