You should look on ebay - there are examples of a boiler with a corgi installer fitting all in for £1500. Even my local guy - corgi - does it for this.

3-4k is way over the top - personally I would have asked this question on the DIY board there are a few actual heating engineers there.

Only other option - which I am not a fan of is to get Warm Front in - the government scheme - potentially you MAY qualify for a free boiler - which ends up costing you between £600 - £1000 as your share - but its a lot better than £1500 and £3-£4k.

    Shop around a bit

combi boilers are not legal anymore - the regs changed (2004 ?) - so that all new boilers need to be Condensing.

i never buy boiler monthly maintainance contracts - cos i have a great CORGI gas engineer who will attend for urgent problems.

i would not buy a boiler off e-bay - if it is second hand, and has been transported incorrectly and not drained down, it could provide endless costly and time-consumng re-connection problems.

as others have said BG will not provide you with a service for such an old boiler, but will probably let you sign a contract before letting you know

Who said the boiler was second hand - these are brand new boilers - its just a way for engineers to obtain jobs they would not ordinarily get by other advertising media.

So have I BUT in this case I was suggesting a NEW boiler I would never advocate installing a second hand boiler - but I would install a boiler that had surface damage to its casing for a good deal.

    So now we are clear

I actually had one of those guys comes to the house for a quote. He was very professional and very polite. We only used someone else because we urgently needed at new boiler and he could not fit us in for two weeks.

Why would a good CORGI guy need to advertise on Ebay?

Have a look at this parliamentary report on Warm Front: before going down that route:
http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmhansrd/cm080303/debtext/80303-0021.htm and bear in mind recent comments from charities on the scheme.

Talk to your local LL association - they should be able to make some recommendations to you.

    Cheap advertising is one reason.

Some of them will buy a number of a particular boiler for a very good price if they buy in bulk - so they need to shift them eventually.

Some may have a number of employees who they want to keep busy and in jobs.

    A whole heap of reasons.

I did say I was not a fan of it BUT the fact remains if you did get approved to pay £600 for an new boiler its a lot cheaper.
