Landlord's Gas service contracts

Hello Folks

just wondered if any landlords out there have these and whether they recommend any?

I was going to get a landlords check and boiler service but told this will be over £200 (inc. VAT) for both. British Gas are doing a landlord's service contract which includes the inspection certificate, service of boiler and 24/7 call out cover (inc parts and labour) for £19 a month so seems a no-brainer really.

Are there any other companies other landlords would recommend? I have 1 property I let out. My boiler is ancient - 30 years plus I reckon - a back boiler, but still going.

Thanks for advice

Beware as they will make a preliminary check when they do the service and may well find that the boiler is not safe or not working. From memory they will not cover a boiler over a certain age anyway.

Get a new boiler - it will pay for itself in the long run

i just ditched a 30 year old boiler, which had been regularly serviced and was in fine form until last year. some of the older boilers were a darned sight better than the modern ones in terms of robustness. just because something is old - if it still works and is safe - why get rid of it just for its ages sake ?

Why are you all telling her to get a new boiler? She hasn't said how old her boiler is. I'd expect a 10-15 year life span out of mine before I replace it.

Lots of people want 24/7 cover just for reassurance of getting things fixed quickly which are important when you are providing a rental service. Doesn't mean the boiler is on it's last legs.

BG will not take on your old boiler.

Have read the thread properly - I think not!
  • Thanks for opinions folks. I rang BG twice and they said they will cover the boiler but I am sceptical. Plumber who checked it before said parts would be hard to come by. It's a Glow worm - have heard of them but probably parts not widely available now.

I am looking to get new boiler. Maybe not a combi as not really in market for spending £3000-4000, at moment which is what i was quoted. The boiler has never broken down once (touch wood) since bought the house over 5 years ago. Like one poster said, why fix if not broken though appreciate maybe not the most economical model which is why I am looking into it.

My parents got a combi less than 10 years ago and already looking to replace it.

I have been quoted £100+VAT to service the back boiler. Plumber said charges more as they are fiddlier to get to. How much is a regular boiler?

You can buy a new boiler for about 650 at screwwfix - so just think how much labour it takes (about a day ) to put one in and think how much profits BG have made recently.

Get quotes from installers in the paper (or ring trading standards for their trade safe list of recommended people)
My local paper lists 2k for new boiler and 7 rads.
