Actually you can. I know of a few who have done this (one working with me at the moment) and he after 3 offers finally got close to what he wanted. Don't be afraid to ask them to reassess your entry point, as you say, you've got experience. Worst they can do is say no!0 -

Really? so you are able to negotiate your starting entry point? any tips how to go about this, from you or your colleague? It's worth a shot especially if I have 8 years on new graduates.......although because I'm in the civil service they'll probably just move me to the bottom of the scale.
interesting....interesting.......MFW 148 - Mortgage £121,000 1Jan11 / Mortgage £120,300 28Jan11 / £119,808 24Feb11 / £119,400 22 April11 / £119,089 29 May11 / £118,500 October110 -
You will get pay on promotion terms applied to your current salary.
So take your current salary and add on 9% then move to the nearest point on the pay scale for the grade you will be moving to.
I honestly don't think you have a hope of negotiating your salary.
I have only heard of people having experience taken into account in certain grades such as ICT grades & Vets and even then it is experience gained outside of NICS that has been used.0 -
Is it not 7.5% Lauri254?0
-
NAR - It used to be 7.5% for a good while, but it was increased to 8% then 9%, it was part of the 3 year pay deal.0

Lauri is right in saying that it's 9% on promotion now.
As for negotiating, it has been done within the past 3 months. Admittedly as Lauri254 states we are a peculiar grade, but the colleague I'm talking about has ALWAYS been a civil servant, so no relevant outside experience to consider. He has been doing a similar job for a number of years already. He simply moved from one post to the current one. The starting point was not what he wanted (or me, but I moved on almost a lateral transfer so not the same issues as I didn't start at the base) so he asked for more. After initially being told no he appealed. They made an offer which wasn't accepted. He again appealed and they made an offer which he took. I'm sorry but I don't know exactly what he said to them, and I'm too polite to ask him.
I also know of 4 others in the same boat over the past 4-5 years, again all in the same peculiar grade.
You don't have anything to lose by asking. As it's HR disConnect you might have to be firm though. They know nothing, so don't listen to a word they say. Make sure you have a response in writing from them, and question it if you need to.

Thanks Bingo Bango.
I wouldn't have thought they would negotiate salary for admin grades, unless they are senior civil servants/senior management grades.
Might as well ask seeing as it is hr connect & they will be all over the place trying to deal with the request lol.
It is true, if ya don't ask ya don't get so might as well ask but I wouldn't be optimistic.
Good luck & let us know if you are successful please0 -
Lol... We're certainly not SCS or even senior management.
Let's hope it works!0 -
Yeah worth a punt. But it's so frustrating in the civil service. As I've said many times I've been in years and anyone coming in gets the same pay as me and now again I've passed this graduate board and new ones coming in will start on the same. c'est la vie!! but thanks for advice!
Dreading where they might put me? Anyone know where graduates usually go? or is there no pattern?MFW 148 - Mortgage £121,000 1Jan11 / Mortgage £120,300 28Jan11 / £119,808 24Feb11 / £119,400 22 April11 / £119,089 29 May11 / £118,500 October110
