Tesco prices more than local shops

Has anyone else noticed that Tesco have been increasing prices on everyday stuff. Example sugar now 97p and the price is hidden amongst lots of others, a local shop is 67p! Plus 4 pints of milk is cheaper at the garage than Tesco!

  • petrol is creeping up too.. what excuse for that?

  • go to the local shop or garage then.
  • We do go to local shops but the problem is that they do not stock everything we need so it is go to 5 or more local shops, pay for parking, carry bags etc or go to a supermarket. The point I was making is that the supermarket should be cheaper, not dearer than a small shop.
  • the supermarket "should" be cheaper? Why? There is no law saying they should, of course they can afford to be... but alas they are there for profit, not just to make our shopping trips cheaper like they would love us all to think. So if u feel the need go to 5 local shops and get it that way cheaper with the extra charge for parking or pay a few pence more for convenience at tesco. Personally i did go a few months boycotting tesco and it did save me money in the long run shopping around at local shops.... however I then moved to Liverpool and to an area with very little local shops....so tesco it is lol

I am not aware that there is any rule that supermarkets have to be cheaper than local shops. There is a case to argue that they can in fact be dearer as you pay extra for the convenience of doing all your shopping under one roof and can park.

  • I don't tend to use Tesco, but I needed a couple of things and they were convenient at the time. I must say I was shocked by how expensive its was! All I bought was some yogurts - 23p more expensive than Waitrose, some mushrooms - twice the price of my local greengocer and half the quality and a couple of Trout - which as well as not being particualary fresh were £1.25 more than my local farmers market.

    I won't be going back!
  • The reason I said Tesco SHOULD be cheaper is their buying power over a local shop. Plus I thought the excess they charge for sugar excessive, 97p versus 67p. However we find most fruit and veg cheaper than the local weekly market, pineapples were half the price!
  • I know what you mean ....Tesco's seem to be inreasing their prices almost every week.

Personally I think that they, along with every other business, are trying to maxmise their profits from a shrinking customer base.

I know my love affair with tescos has ended.

The supermarkets near me petrol stations are not as a rule cheaper then the Total, Shell, Murco or Texaco.

Tescos is always one of the most expensive there as Sainsburys is the same price as other cheapest petrol station.

I always find it amusing of the massive queues at Tescos on a weekend as if people drove less than 3 miles away they would find a petrol station that was cheaper or the same price without a queue.

Oh my love affair with Tescos ended years ago due to some of their rude staff.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
