As it is (seemingly) working fine even at zero press I'm not too fussed about finding a solution. I'll just keep it topped up every few weeks.
Not a good idea, if the system is loosing water then it allmost certainly is taking in air thru the same place the water is escaping, fresh water + air = rust.
If the diaphram simply needs recharged then its a quick and easy job or the pressure vessel need replacing is also quite quick to do, should there be a leak in the system then it can be troublesome to find. If you have solid floors look/smell out any damp, if you have suspended wooden floors downstairs then it could involve lifting traps in every room, if your hot water is slightly discoloured then this would indicate a leak in its coil within your hot water tank (if applicable). If the boiler is housed outside or in a garage then the problem could be in the pipework between the boiler and house, damp spots in dry weather would be a clue for this.
