Redundant help please

Hi Everyone
OH has just been made redundant, his redundancy package is made up of 6 months pay in lieu which we know will be taxed and national ins etc and just under £6000 redundancy

My question is can he claim any benefits immediately? I work part time 13 hours per week.

Will we recieve any help towards the cost of our mortgage or should we just continue to pay this ousrelves out of the lieu money till it runs out?

Probabkly will have a tonne of questions for all you experts out there once i finally get my had round all this.

The 6 mnoths paid in lieu of notice can be considered the same as "gardening leave" so from a benefit point of view you will not be able to claim / sign on until 6 months is over. Any redundancy payment upto £30K is tax free and does not affect this date although if benefits are means tested then it could reduce them

With regard to your mortgage, check if you have insurance on it for unemployment and if so make a claim on it as soon as he stops work.

No, they should be able to claim straight away. The rules about when you can start claiming have changed (don't know when, but in the last year or so I think). You can now apply for and receive benefits from when you finish work, even if you have been paid in lieu of notice.

So are you saying that an individual can be paid for 6 months ILON and also be paid for the same 6 months in benefits, am i reading it right. No wonder we are in the proverbial

Yes, that is correct.

However, I don't agree with your assessment of the situation. It's just providing slightly better immediate security for those who have lost their jobs. Why should anyone have to wait to be able to claim benefit when they have no money coming in, even if they have received a lump sum from their previous employer? After 6 months, JSA is means-tested so in the event that the redundant person has yet to get a new job, and still has a lump sum, the benefit will be reduced/withdrawn at that point.

Wow, but they have 6 months wages to provide immediate security after losing their jobs.

Thankyou all for your helpful responses, anniehanlon my OH will pay far more in tax out of his 6 month lieu than he will recieve in benefits for 6 months and has paid plenty more for the past 24 years so i don't think its too much to ask for a little help when we need it most.

May I also add, as a lady who has just been made redundant, that it is totally right that you should be able to claim benefits asap. Let us not forget that these benefits are only monies that we have paid into the system . It is bad enough to lose your job, through no fault of your own, without suffering the additional stress of worrying about finances.

He wont pay any more tax than is due

Just to add your OH needs to sign on to keep his NI contributions upto date, i think
