Which Email Client Is Best

I'm using windows mail for all my email but not sure if I like it, the links don't work when I click on them so I have to login to my AOL mail just to access links, and when trying to be clever by shortening the name of a link which I'm sending I can't seem to copy and paste from my browser bar to the http box so I have to literally type the whole thing.

Also can I use a voice to tell me when I have new mail etc?

Is windows mail the best client?
If not can anyone recommend a good one

thanks

Mike

  • googlemail is very popular, free and has good spam filters
  • I use a version of Thunderbird Portable for Usenet posting on the move and it's good, so you might want to check the 'full' client out here. A lot of people rate it highly.

I use googlemail, gmx, thunderbird, windows mail and outlook.

Personally I like outlook but tend to use googlemail more often so that I can access my emails from anywhere.
Thunderbird does a good job and is free.
You can generally choose some sort of notification when new mail arrives for most things

I use gmx and Thunderbird too. I have ABP and KnuJon add-ons on my Thunderbird and spam/filters, and I love watching it get rid of all the spam that I get on my tiscali mail! (tiscali's spam protection is disgusting: you have to pay more to get any basically..)

I love gmx, because it collects mail from various email addresses (including yahoo, hotmail and gmail) in it, and you can create up to 10 gmx email addresses on it - handy for organising, and useful for temporary addresses that you might want to delete later.

    :)

EDIT: gmx is web-based so you need to log into it online: it's not resident on your PC, but you can log into it anywhere. It doesn't have any fancy notifications for when you get mail, as far as I know. It has spam protection and customizable black and white lists. I just notice it uses symantec's anti-virus engine for checking incoming/outgoing mail. I 'fell out' with symantec a while back, but can't deny that they're good in this field: just makes me hope that gmx will remain free....
It also has address book, organizer, file storage and forum.
Oh, and links load up fine when clicked ^..^

    P.S: No I don't work for them :D

If you want one that 'lives' on your PC and lets you know when you have new mail, I'd agree with what mymatebob said about Thunderbird.

You should be able to open links directly if you adjust the settings in Windows Mail Preferences/Options. Sorry, I'm on Apple Mail so can't give you the exact instructions. And you should also be able to select any sound you want to use for a particular function just by changing it from the default and then browse to your preferred sound file.

  • At home I use Outlook but I have a GoogleMail account that is setup to read the mails that goto my main account so I can get them when not at home.

Google also has GoogleDocs which are very good as well, sort of protable Word and Excel.

regarding the links you assume as I did but I have looked and can't seem to find anything to enable links.

Is there anyone out there who is actually using windows mail and can advise how to enable links?

    thanks

I just had a look in Outlook Express and it may be similar in WM. Have you set your emails default to HTML format in Tools/Options/Send tab? If not try that.
All the changes from the default settings are in Tool/Options (at least they are on OE).

I use the very lightweight Courier (formerly known as Calypso). It's basic, but very fast, incredibly easy-to-use, has an address book, preview pane, lets you manage multiple accounts... and everything you'd want, really. You can get it here:

I also use Popcorn on a few PCs - it doesn't require installation, so you can run it from a USB stick, which is handy. It doesn't display HTML natively, but that's good from a security point-of-view:
