  • I was told that if i performend (which by the way i have worked hard to hit my targets) i would receive a bonus.
some of them agricultral workers who "get their hands dirty" take home more money in a week than i do in a month.

And Woolworths staff were told that if they turned up and did their job well then they could turn up next day/week/month/year and carry on working and getting paid.

Unfortunately the company ran out of money and went bust. So no matter how hard they worked, they had no job to come back to.

The exact same thing happened to your employer. Only The Taxpayer bailed you out and you still have a job, and a wage.

But you're still saying "pay me my bonus, I worked hard".

THERE IS NO MONEY YOUR COMPANY WENT BUST!

If I were in your position (and I appreciate it's not your fault, any more than it's the fault of the Woolworths shop floor worker), I'd just be bloody glad to still be employed!

  • The difference with Woolworths is that the business did not make any money. The retail division had been a basket case for years, and despite some stores doing OK on an individual basis they were still set up like a retail empire and losing money with everything they did accordingly.

Right up to their final week my counterpart on their buying team was indignant that Woolworths were OK - "I can see the numbers and business is better than last year". Except that it wasn't.

But had Woolworths still been here having found a buyer, and bonuses had been paid to their EUK staff (that division being hugely profitable) then I as a supplier wouldn't have had any complaint.

Have you not just described banks? £37bn bailouts? Further "no cap" bailouts? And you say the difference with woolworths is they didnt make any money?

Parts of Woolworths made money. A lot of their stores were indeed profitable. As was their CD Disstribution arm.

Infact, part of the reason Woolworths had to wind up is because of lack of credit from the banks.

You also say as a suppler you wouldnt have any issues. As a taxpayer, neither would I.

As a supplier its not your money going into their bonuses, as a taxpayer, if woolworths had a buyer it wouldnt have been my taxes going into bonuses.

It's a bit like comparing apples with oranges.

I've not read whole thread.. tut, tut..but not up to too much data input this evening.

    However.

Seems to me that no one wants anyone else to get anything. Hence the fuss over foreign workers, bank bonuses, anyone in fact who might be making a bit of money while the rest of us are feeling poorer and more threatened by the day.

Either you believe in a capitalist model, which entitles a business to run itself how it sees fit, and that includes using foreign workers and paying bonuses if so desired OR you really do want a Socialist model where we all get the same as each other.

I know that's not what most people want so I can only put the anger about foreign workers, bonuses, etc. down to petty jealousy.

Have you thought of transcribing your thoughts on to a handy placard and waving it at people?

I am hoping this year that i along with the people i work with will get a profit share pay out. In our contract it states that if the company makes so much profit after tax then we will get a pay out.

The previous 2 years the company made HUGE losses despite record orders and deliveries and as expected did not pay out. This year however they have made a massive turnaround and now have billions in the bank after being billions overdrawn. Nothing has been announced but we are expecting a cash lump sum.

What annoys me is bank staff who say that they deserve a bonus because they have worked hard and they didnt cause the problems.

Guess what, we all worked hard, none of us had anything whatsoever to do with the losses and none of us were given a profit share because there was no profit!

Why should the bankers and bank staff be rewarded for failure!! Simple answer is that they shouldnt get a penny!

Trouble is Mewbes, the banks want the government to take over and bail them out (socialist model) whilst still getting their bonuses (capitalist model).

Can't have the best of both.

Maybe. But the fudge at present is we own some but not all of them, and we have adopted a hands off approach. That was the picture a month or so ago, till people stopped believing Brown had saved the world. Then he quickly needed a scapegoat or two, and banking staff seem to be today's villains.

I'm not saying I approve of bonuses (but how po-faced does that sound) - if I did then maybe I'd want to work in a commssion / bonus driven culture. But if a banker gets a bonus, or an estate agent sells a house, or someone else gets something - it's really not up to me to spend my life moaning about.

Different things wind different people up - that's what makes it fun on here.
