Another Bank gets it's bonuses at our expense.

This time it's HBOS.

While I agree that shop floor staff may have worked hard over the last 12 months, isn't working hard part of the job that they get a salary for? Why is it an almost automatic right to get a bonus? If the bank weren't there today they wouldn't have got a bonus so how come, just because there's been a major injection by the public, they should still get it?

It stinks and I'm sick of this country and it's greedy, money grabbing, materialistic ways

  • Agreed

What's so difficult about them constantly asking whether I want a mortgage, insurance, life cover an ISA etc etc etc - every time I go in to do a simple transaction.

Presumably that's a standard part of their job so it they shouldn't be paid extra.

Anyway - all that time filling in questionaires (for stuff I don't want) merely detracts from providing half decent customer service.

  • no company that makes a loss (or even no profit) should be giving out bonuses. I thought bonuses were paid out of profits.

How can a company that has lost 10bn be in a position to pay out bonuses?? I am surprised they can pay out salaries and overheads!

this is the trouble with today's society. they think they deserve something extra for working. so, they worked hard. if there is no money, there is no money.

if they did !!!!!! all and there was loads of money in the pot, then have a bonus, by all means.
  • Words cant describe my utter contempt for this news, its simply disgusting.
  • Agree with you all. If Companies do not make profit then bonuses should not be given. I don't think anyone right now would be expecting a bonus. I certianly would not.
  • Disagree - bonus would be merited for significant outperformance over and above reasonable expectations of the job and should only be paid out where it has benefited the company (ie shareholder) as a whole.

Not for flogging home insurance at any cost (as part of job) or putting shareholder/depositor assets at risk through gambling

my bonus is due soon, i can't wait.
  • I have no problem at all with ordinary bank staff being paid bonuses. They work in High Street branches and support centres in a very competitive market, they are set targets and they hit them. The collapse of the group has as much to do with them as it has to do with me - nothing. So why take a £1,000 bonus off someone earning £17,000 who has done their job properly and to contract?

The blame lies with their boards and senior managers, and with the idiots in their investment arms. Penalising the poor sods at ground level seems very petty.

The problem is there are lots of people out there who have worked very hard and lost there jobs, why should someone who works for a company that in effect is broke take tax payers money as a bonus?

That's what they get a Salary for. If they don't hit targets (and if it's Sales Targets they are frowned upon by the FSA), then they shouldn't keep their job.

Somebody contributing to the profitiability of the company should be rewarded, but bonuses for the sake of giving bonuses "because we always have" is immoral under the circumstances. If the banks were using their own money then they can do what the hell they want with them, it's the Shareholders who lose out, but this isn't the case. This is OUR money they are giving away.

No profit, No bonus! It's simple really.
