Lidl dried dog food anyone?

Options
Hi all

I have been advised by a collegue to try the above for my dog, they advised they were using James Wellbeloved dried food and were paying quite a lot for it at their vets and then discovered this at £3.00 for a large resealable bag, they said they checked the ingredients and they were practically the same.
Has anyone tried this or would you advise against it?

  • I havent tried it - I did read someone on dogpages sayng their dog did ok on it
  • I sometimes give mine, Lidls wet food and they are crazy about it....especially the stuff in the sausages...Not heard much about their dried food but knowing Lidls, it's probably some good stuff in disguise...

I would hardly say that the ingredients are practically the same

This is the contents list for the Beef variety:
    contents.
    cereal
    veg derivavtives
meat and animal derivatives 4% beef
    oils
    fats
    minerals
    veg 4% peas
    yeast
    protein 23%
    fat 8%
    fibre 2.5%
    ash 7.5%
    moisture 8%
    vitamins A,D3,E
    copper
    E320/321 antioxidants

Compare that to JWB and there is no comparison

However thats not to say that its going to do any dog any harm. However if your dog has a sensitive tum I wouldnt advise it - stick to a food that has human grade meats, isnt packed full of cereals and avoids beefs and dairy
  • I'll need to check it when I go home as they brought me a bag to see if she gets on ok with it, I know its not beef, am sure its something about veg etc?
We had her on Chappie as was told that was better for her than Pedigree Chum tinned but I really want to get her onto dried food, mainly for her teeth.
I have been using Plaqueoff which has def helped but I am sure dried food could help even more?
  • How about Chappie dried food?? That's good value???

We 'inherited' 2 collies who were used to home cooked meals, human style - yes really - braised beef, mashed potatoes. Cheese and sliced packet ham for breakfast, or sometimes kipper fillets (inc butter pat!). Vet suggested moving them over to dried food (for better nourishment and tooth care) which one of them (the mother) took to at once, but the other didn't eat for a couple of days and then gradually picked up on it. Now they both exist very happily on Wagg Beef and Veg currently at around £11 for 15kg sack at Asda, Tesco, PAH etc. It was around £9 until recently.

They both have lovely glossy coats and we are constantly complimented on their appearance
  • I feed wagg working dog (cheaper, no VAT!) and am happy with it, as is the dog!

I am sure that the lidl fod will be fine, especially if they get occasional meat scraps, oily fish, natural yogurt etc on top for extra nutrients!
  • thanks all. I do have a lhasa apso so a small dog so unsure if the working dog stuff is the way to go? I did not realise chappie offered dried food so I will look into that option too.

As I always advise, please dont look at initial cost per bag as the true cost of food but to look at how much it costs per day to feed your pet. The Arden Grange I feed my dog is around 35 quid a 15kg sack but only costs around 30p a day to feed, and Arden grange is one of the premium kibbles

If you want a cheaper alternative to JWB dog food, try pets at home Wainwright dog food, that lidl stuff will be alot cheaper but the contents are poor...like the scrapings off the factory floor!

ps I don't have a dog but my sister has some and she's obsessed!lol

By the way if I had a dog I would try anything, as long as he ate it!lol
