    I use candles too!

Alternatively, lavender oil in an oil burner or put a couple of drops onthe light bulb.

You can make your own air freshener spray -
    • dissolve baking soda in some hot water, add lemon juice and put in a spray bottle.
    • mix essential oil with some white vinegar and put in a spray bottle
    • mix eucalyptus, lemon and thyme essential oils with water and put in a spray bottle (this is a disinfectant mixture)
To make a gel air freshener you need

    225ml water
    1 packet gelatine
    1/8 tsp of vodka
    1/2 tsp of essential oil

Boil 110ml of water, and dissolve gelatine. Add the cold water and stir thoroughly. Add vodka and essential oil, and stir well. Pour into jars. Don't put it anywhere hot or it will melt! If it does melt, bung it in the fridge to re-solidify.

They sound great, where can you get essential oils from? I was looking some time ago and didn't know where to look, ended up on Yankee Candle shop where they have refresher oils for pot pourri but didn't think they would be strong enough. Oh oh oh just had a thought, do they sell them in Body Shop?????

I buy my essential oils either online or from the health food shop. Make sure that you get good quality oils (I use essentially oils or cariad).

I like the Duck Discs - they do the job and make the toilet smell loverley!!

The thing is that they look very pretty (in a flowery shape) when you first put them in the toilet but after a week or so's worth of flushing the gel loses it shape and starts to 'slide' down the side of the toilet!!

My son asked why there was a big snotty bogey stuck to the side of the toilet!!

If you've never used bleach blocks in the cistern before, be careful, as in old plumbing they can trigger leaks (probably because they're held together with dirt :p )

Dont have to be old either. We stopped using them because our toilets kept leaking and the Dyno rod guy said it was because of these things dissolving the rubber seals and limescale. And my house is only 6 years old!! (good old Bovis shoddy workmanship! But i'll save that rant for another time!)

I use the Toilet Duck discs and they are great. Only thing is they look like snot when they start to dissolve!!!

Im currently using my free eco toilet cleaner from my Tesco home panel trial. Works a treat!!

I'd go for the candle/ homemade gel option - I hate to be flsuhing even more unneccesary chemicals into our water table for the sake of a nice smell. We have lot of lovely lush bath products in the bathroom which disgiuse the smell of most things!

  • I use a few drops of essential oils on a piece of toilet roll, then stuff it into the middle of the toilet roll, keeps it lovely. Also do the same for the bins!

Lidl do an unusual air freshener. It is in a round shaped bottle with a wick inside. You shake the wick (which is in the lid) into the air fresh and then pull it up and it makes the room smell fresh. They last for absolutely yonks. I think about £1.29. Not really OS, but "thrifty" on price!:)

I try to leave bleach down the loo for a whole day or night when I know it wont be used.

Rather than using these nasty toilet cleaners, why not use a green alternative, Ecover or Bio-D for example don't have all the rubbish in, but clean just as well or better- why don't you try bulk buying which saves you money- try www.ecotopia.co.uk, i now have lots of eco-cleaning products in my cuboard and i ahev my onwn little refill staion- brilliant.

I read information on here a coupe of weeks ago about bulk buying, cna't find it again now, but thanks!

    Happy shopping:rotfl:
