Keeping toliets fresh!

I rarely remember to use toilet rim blocks, but I've been thinking about trying Duck Fresh Discs, as I like the idea of there being no plastic bits to deal with.

Seen a few reviews online that seem to be pretty good, but I'm just wondering what (if anything) other people use, and if there's a more OS alternative (normally it's put the toilet lid down, and spay some Detto Neutra Air as needed
). :o

I use Parazone bleach tablets in the cistern - nothing hanging in the loo trapping germs... and when we first moved here you should have seen the black mould that got flushed out of the cistern...
They don't colour the water but there is foam when you flush...but I also scrub and bleach regularly too

I once accidentally knocked one of those 'over-the-rim-blocks' into the loo when flushing. It disappeared down the bend and I thought that was the last of it. A few hours later the loo was slow to empty and by the evening, it was taking over an hour for the water level to go down.

I rang the repairs guys the next morning (thank goodness I was a council tenant!). The darn thing had got itself hooked around the bend and was catching 'everything' that had been flushed - what embarassment! Whole toilet had to be removed and a new one fitted (the old one had been 'cemented' to the floor when fitted, so had to be smashed for removal!). Obviously I've never used those darn things since that event.

I currently use Asda SmartPrice Toilet Cleaner. Very similar to 'quack quack' but without the bendy neck. I just decant it into a bottle with a bendy neck! Cleans the toilet well AND has a pleasant pine disinfectant fragrance - for 27p! Every couple of months or so, I use a limescale remover. Two toilets in this house and I need to keep the downstairs one especially clean and fragrant as I often have official visitors for work.

Bicarb & vinegar... Sprinkle the bicarb on, squirt with vinegar, leave for 15-30 mins then scrub & flush.

Or borax, lemon juice & hot water (this just disinfectant, the other should get rid of limescale too)

If you've never used bleach blocks in the cistern before, be careful, as in old plumbing they can trigger leaks (probably because they're held together with dirt :p )

I'm not concerned with cleaning the toilet, thats sorted, but just having it smell fresh/nicer on a daily basis.

It's not practical to put anything in our cistern, and also I've read that cistern blocks are bad (but can't remember all the reasons why)! :o

Like Olliebeak, I remember a school friend having problems with the pumbing at home because she flushed a toilet rim cleaner down the bowl  A similar problem as above, but they weren't council tenants, so had to pay a plumber over £100 to repair the damage.

When I've cleaned the toilet in the mornings I put a good squirt of bleach down it & leave it until the next person comes along & flushes it. Never had any problems with 'freshness' ;) I also buy the parazone bleach blocks & drop one into the cistern once a month. They're cheapest in Wilkinsons round here :D Edited to say: Have just read your post properly & realised that you can't put anything in the cistern so just ignore that last bit!!

I have a Tesco Value airfreshener sitting on the top of the cistern, yo know the jelly-like ones which gradually release the smell and a stick on touch n fresh spray (which is REALLY expensive) on the side which the kids are told ONLY to spray for a number 2 but they use it all the time! Cleaning wise I don't put things in the cistern (one I can't get the lid off and the other one seems to dissolve too quicky) so I use Tesco limescale remover (fantastic stuff, live in really hard water area) and Toilet Duck Brush where you flush away the brush bit (got that because I had curious children who liked to examine the toliet brush next to the loo which usually is disgusting! This way nothing germy is left in the house!)

Actually reading this back I've realised that my toilet cleaning is probably the most non-OS cleaning I do! Might review that......

We use these (my OH bought it, appealed to him as a new and exciting gadget...!). I was a bit dubious but I must say, they're really good! We bought a couple of packs at half price, and they work out pretty good value as they last us much longer than a week per dose too.

Sorry, not OS, but just thought I'd chip in with a review!

another vote for the Duck Fresh Discs... I had a problem with the hanging things falling off too so these are great and last ages too. I got mine on special offer as they're expensive full price.
