Warburtons "New size!" bread - don't fall for it

Options
It's the old Little Chef "Early Starter" trick. Take away half the tomato but keep the price the same. Then increase the price and put the tomato back.

I reckon we're going to see 600g loaves become the new "standard", at the same price as 800g loaves. With price inflation carrying on where we left off; but on 25% LESS product.

  • Suppose its a little bit like the plastic milk bottle trick.

    Instead of 1 pint (568ml) 2pint (1.136L) 4pint (2.27L)
    ....they are now 500ml, 1L & 2L....where's the price reduction?
    Profit=sanity
    Turnover=vanity
    Greed=inhumanity:dance:

    Where do you buy milk? It's still sold as 1 pint, 2 pint etc in Tesco & Asda (with the legal 568ml/1.136ml next to the volume)

    Many years ago I had a Saturday job in a bakers and I remember that Trading standards had the right to come into the shop and weigh the loaf to make sure it weighed either 400 or 800 grams, but it appears that the regulations have now changed.

    It is like crusts away. 800g loaf, remove the crusts so you end up with a 400g loaf but the bread still costs £1.23.

    In regard to milk 4 pints is around £1.60 now but in Tesco and Asda they have a 2 litre bottle for £1.06 which is cheaper by the ml.

    I picked up some Scampi in T's the other day n it was on half price but the bag had shrunk to half size it used to be. I put it back twice as fast and bought seafood dippers with twice as much and less cost - made me twice as happy....
    SIMPLES!
  • But with the crusts away bread extra effort is going into the production which would cause a price increase so at least its the same.

    "From 11th April 2009 the only pre-packaged products required to be made up in specified quantities are certain wines and spirits." Quote from NWML

    Welcome to the world of confusion that will make it harder to compare like with like.

    Bread currently has to be sold in quantities of 400g, 800g or miltiples of 400g. Less than 300g makes it exempt from this. From 11 April there could be a free for all with pre packed bread being any size the manufacturer wants. I guess the major plant bakers/supermarkets will set the new standard weight
  • Recently all the local shops put up their milk to £1.30 or £1.40 for 2L. One shop I've just found is doing 2L for 99p. Certainly worth looking round the smaller places imho.

    I was going to say I thought it was restricted to 400g and 800g. Thanks.
  • Did anyone notice Ryvita recently? They are smaller which was introduced with the new packaging.
