You can self refer yourself to Occupational Therapy ( one of the only services that you can do this apparently). Mine is based at the Rehabilitation Department of local hospital. I first seen them when I was Diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and she was great! We done an assessment for daily living and she went over a lot of joint protection techniques with me. I came along with a lot of gadgets that she gave me free of charge, including cutlery, scissors, kitchen knife, hairbrush, veg basket, tap turners and many more. She also done a visit to my home and arranged for a handrail to be fitted ( through the social work dept) and put me forward for a grant for walk in wet room. I know it all varies council to council or heath board but I have been very lucky with mine, so would urge anyone to contact them first before buying anything. No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:

Most local 'mobility' shops are able to answer silly questions. In most areas the OT dept will require a GP referral for a specific issue/problem however most are friendly and willing to answer most questions if you give them a ring with a problem. If they cant help you, I'm sure they will point you in the right direction, and will be able to give you the numbers to local suppliers of equipment that they dont issue etc. hope that helps.Making small changes, hoping they will last....0

It may seem a stupid question (or not), but are there any websites where you can see what aids you can use to help you do whatever task?
A few years ago we (mam and I) walked into a mobility shop at the metro centre, and asked a "stupid" question - is there anything to help putting socks on without bending too much? Of course, there was such a gadget, and honestly it has allowed mam to put her socks and tights much easier.
That shop has now closed down, so we cant go in and ask questions for other tasks. Are there any websites that would give inspiration as to what is available?
Thanks
In Durham we have Independant Living Centers which are run by the council or in Newcasle there`s a center near the RVI which does the same thing but the name has escaped me for now, they are all very good at answering questions and they arnt making a profit so any advice is impartial.

It's a hard choice: if everyone buys online to save money then very good mobility shops will struggle to stay open, and sometimes you just cannot beat that face-to-face service. Don't know what to suggest. As a paraplegic, I set up a website, to make buying 2nd hand disability equipment easy, and save those, who cannot afford new, some money - sometimes the difference between getting something necessary and doing without.Experience is not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you.0
