Does fitting extra ram invalidate the warrenty

Got my new PC coming tomofrrow with 2gb of ram and was hoping to buy an extra 2gb. But does that void the warrenty?

    Which company-is it a Dell?
I don't think it does-but if you had a warranty problem then you could just remove the extra RAM before it goes back or the engineer came to fix it. They could never tell.

For better or worse -- Dell?

If you break anything while doing it, that obviously won't be covered under the warranty. But fitting RAM doesn't immediately invalidate it. Computers are user serviceable.

I do wonder if quite a few companies do try to get out of the warranty with this excuse though

    depends on the warrenty
many companies fit switches which show if the case has been opened
whereas for example my vaio has instructions on upgrading ram/HD so it really depends o the warrenty supplied

I'm probably wrong but you might be faced with some sort of security tape where the case opens. When peeled off/case opened it would display "void" on the tape thus voiding your warranty

It wouldn't surprise me if they tried it on.

Whether or not the case had been opened would be pretty irrelevant, regardless of what the warranty says.

You rights under a warranty are in addition to your rights under the Sale of Goods Act. They do not replace them.

If its a Dell then you are wrong.

Your rights under the sale of goods act still apply even if a company warranty is voided (which is unlikely).

Do you need 4? To upgrade, you'll probably have to buy 4, and throw 2 away.

Probably not. I just added another 4GB to my new(ish) Dell which originally came with 2GB, making 6GB. It came with 2x1GB fitted and two slots (1 dual channel pair) free, so I added 2x2GB.
