My dad (college principal) organised for me to go work in the college library. I actually quite liked it, despite the fact that I am the loudest person ever! :p Do like to read a lot tho, and I quite enjoyed all the organising and putting stuff away in the right place.

In the gym I used to work at we had loads of work experience kids, and they would mainly do cleaning so I felt sorry for them. We used to tell them this is what they'd end up doing forever if they mucked about at school!

  • I thought work experience was done in yr 10?

She should talk to her school careers and connexions advisors. The best placements do get snapped up early and I am guessing she will be going before GCSE's start? so will be soon.

Straight after half term, contact the school careers advisor (yourself if necessary) and discuss with them what sort of things she is interested in doing, I do think all this should have been done 10-18 months ago though. There may still be time to find a placement for her yourself, again based on her preferences. If nothing external is available another school in the area may take her - she may be interested in young children? or office work, or could help caretakers, performing arts or art department, Science technician? maybe in her own school? It all depends on what is left that is closest to her aspirations.

    Wish her luck!

    !

Surely kids don't do work experience before GCSEs?

However, I do agree that the best places are arranged a long time in advance, hence my first question.

Hiya guys thanks all what a great response! Daughter is looking ahead to just after GCSE's. Her passions are Literature/Art/Classic Civilization so guess an art gallery or museum would be good.

I'm trying to get her to arrange it sp looking for a few pointers.

No sign of work experience on the agenda/horizon for my Yr 10. Not that it will be an issue anyway, he's adamant he wants to follow in his father's footsteps (as does his Yr 9 brother) so they'll hook up with his father's workplace to experience aspects of it. May or may not put them off ;)
