I am trying to install a Firefox extension but everytime I click on install a liitle bar appears at the top of the screen that says 'Software Installation is currently disabled...click Edit Options to enable it'. There is also an Edit Options button. I have clicked on that and added addons.mozilla.org to the approved sites for software installation, but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Is the extension compatible with the version of Firefox you are using?2 heads are better than 1….unless they are on the same body!0

Yes. I have the latest version of firefox and the extension is listed as one of the Firefox Contest Finalists.
I found this on the FAQ page in relation to enabling software installation, but it might as well be in Dutch for all it means to me:
In Firefox 1.5 this preference still exists, but it is now accessed through about:config. Find xpinstall.enabled and set it to true by double clicking on it or by right clicking and choosing reset.FB :heartpuls Wiggly

You could try the little trick I posted last week.
Don't click the install link.
Instead just drag the link into the URL bar. This bypasses the system.0 -
Type "about:config" into the address bar (where it currently says "http://forums.moneysavingexpert...." etc.). This will bring up a list of variables in alphabetical order. You should then be able to search for "xpinstall.enabled" and set it to true as described.
I've no idea what this does or which plugin you're trying to install, but good luck! :-)0 -
Nice tip sra

Firetune is well worth a look. It significantly improves the performance of Firefox.2 heads are better than 1….unless they are on the same body!0
