GAS BILL £639.27 becomes 'We owe you £33.96'.

I was horrified to receive this Bill for 30 Sept>23 Dec 08 and knew it for a nonsense.
Submitting meter reading now lists 'cancelled charges including VAT' of £403.34.
It's just one more for the crazy utility bills roll call on here - I live alone in an HA bungalow.

We've had the same problem. Bill for Sept 08 - 24 Dec 08 - £749.26 !!!

We moved house in that period to a slightly bigger house but even we can't understand it our typical bill would be £250-£300 per quarter. BG are adamant we owe it.


I did all I could to see if there was an error, checked we were being charged in ft3, checked our daily average, got it checked out for gas leaks, but nothing

There's a huge difference in how much different boilers cost to run and how much gas they use in different houses. An efficient boiler in a small well insulated house is going to use less gas than the same boiler in my house! A less efficient boiler will use more gas still.

How many kwh are you averaging?

Must companies let you phone or update your meter readings as often as you want. Monthly would help get rid of nasty surpises

If you are being charged for ft3, each gas unit will be approx 31kWh.

Are you sure you don't have a metric meter(cubic metres) where each gas unit is approx 11 kWh.

Was either the start meter reading or end meter reading estimated?

Agreed, but one can rarely know in advance when they're due.
I was away for over 5 months unexpectedly last year.

It's an old house and I checked to make sure it said ft3 on it and the gas bill does a metric conversion on it.

Sorry error on my part, we actually got a bill for £729.36 inc VAT. Incidentally we have the exact same new boiler at both previous and new home

583 imperial units x 2.83 metric conversion x 39.4976 calorific value x 1.0226400 volume correction = 3.6 to kWh = 18511.68 kWh


First 624 @ 7.203 and next 17887.68 ( :eek:) at 3.632p (of course we're looking to switch at some point!) but still really disappointed by this bill.

I feel for you, nads.
I expect a similar outcome for my electricity - not so extreme, but same applies.
