For the information Elephant, Bell and Diamond are all part of the admiral group but trade as different comanys. I was with elephant, renewal came through so i checked around best qoute was from bell with admiral about £30 more and elephant another £30 on top of that (Qoute from elephant as a new customer was cheaper for 12months than my renewal for 10months).
Anyway i called elephant and got the same reply as bs7 they just wouldn't mach it. You would think they would all give the same quote.

As for they renewal being more than quoting as a new customer you will find that most insurers will do this hoping that the customer will just renew without shopping around, it will surprise you how many do.

I can't confirm it works ...yet...

BUT on the payment page it asks "Whose credit/debit card is this?" (Family, Policyholder, Other, Spouse/Partner). If you select "Family" or "Other" a popup window then says "We will use this card for any future changes and for renewal. We will request payment at renewal, unless you cancel, to avoid the risk of you driving uninsured. To do this, we need the consent of the cardholder. Click OK if the cardholder gives their consent."

If you click "cancel" then the following message is displayed: "Please note that payment from the Third Party card will only be accepted for the initial premium. Any future premium charges will require an alternative payment method."

i.e. it seems that they won't automatically deduct funds in 10 months time. And it would seem a better way of ensuring you remember to check other quotes when it comes to renewal and avoid having to risk them taking the next premium without confirming it with you.

i have haggled successfully for an amount in the region of £30 between diamond and admiral (last year). this year the renewal wasn't particularly competitive and there wasn't much leeway in the 3 quotes from elephant/admiral/diamond (all around £490). I got a quote from adrian flux for £414 which I asked if they could beat. They reduced to £445 but couldn't beat 414 so I switched to Adrian Flux.

(whcih was a bit of a pain as i had to photocopy mine and my partner's driving licence as well as my no claims bonus) but worth it to save the cash.
