I have toyed with the idea, on and off, to get a yogurt maker and now reading this thread I like the idea again. :j
Have checked out Lakeland and see they do an Electric yogurt maker for £4.99. How does this differ from the Easi Yo and is is a better, cheaper option. Any advice gratefully taken.:DJoined WW again!! in November 2010 - four stone loss so far :T

my first batch is done
the kids loved it whch is fantastic and it tasted really nice, a lot like the muller corners yoghurts :j
the only problem is that its still very runnyabout the consistancy of single cream. what have i done wrong........i used about 3 dessert spoons of yeo valley bio yoghurt mixed into a litre of room temperature long like soya milk (the stuff sweetened with apple juice) do you think the sweetened milk could have been a problem or didnt i use enough starter? i switched it on and left for 5 hours. the instructions say between 4 and 10 hrs.
any ideas gratefully received- prior planning prevents poor performance!

I've made two lots now and mine has been runny as well. I've had to strain it a bit. I've been making HM yoghurt in my easyio maker which doesn't take 1L too so I"m using less milk. I'm using 3 tbs yoghurt, 1/2 cup milk powder and I'd say 3/4 of a litre. Mine is thicker than yours but still pourable IYKWIM.
I was going to reduce the milk even more next time. I'd say it's got something to do with the apple juice. I know you have to put any sweeteners in after you make it as it won't thicken.Is there any other soya milk without the apple juice? I'd try that next time.

I use the Lakeland electric yoghurt maker and I love it
A few tips I've learnt over the last couple of years:
1. I bought an extra insert and make up a batch of yoghurt and straight away make up the next batch. As soon as I use up 1 litre and put another batch on. I never run out that way.
2. I always use UHT semi skimmed milk (it seems to work the best for our tastes). I add 3-4 tablespoons of yoghurt and 3 heaped tablespoons of powdered milk (the sort that comes in little plastic milk bottles). Whisk it all together and put into the yoghurt maker.
3. The optimum time for our taste in the yoghurt maker is 9 hours. OH puts it on at night, I take it out when I get up in the morning.
4. I quite often use Greek yoghurt as a starter - lovely and thick an yummy. Any excess from the original pack does freeze, but when used from the freezer it does produce a 'grainy' first batch. Persevere as it does become normal after a batch or too (giving the grainy batch a bit of stir works well too).
5. My current batch was started from a small carton of Langley Farm natural yogurt and is still going strong.
6. I find after a while the yoghurt starts to 'split' ... this is when I know I need to make another batch from a new starter (either from the freezer or a new carton).
7. You make think it a bit much .. making 2 litres .. but yoghurt is so versitile. Our breakfasts consist of oats, fruit and yoghurt mixed together (delicious). Ouf packed lunch includes a small tub of pureed apple (or tinned fruit / lemon curd / jam), a sprinkling of oats and topped with yoghurt. Yoghurt mixed with mustard (or mint sauce) makes a lovey dresssing on a salad mix for lunch. Also great for coating salmon, stirring into curry mixes and lovely mixed with cream cheese and drizzed over cous cous. Also at blackberry picking time, it is great wizzed up with blackberries using a hand blender.

You can thicken by adding powdered milk at the beginning or by straining it through a muslin ( I use the one that I used to use for the babies). You can then use the whey that you've strained off for pancakes or scones - lovely.
Oh wait a mo, you're using dairy free- so scrub that about milk powder! But I'm sure you can still strain it.
I bought a massive tub of Yeo valley for 10p and I'm going to freeze it in little tubs for starters, keep me going for ages.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
thanks for that, i am going to try a little bit more starter and the unsweetened milk! will use up yeasterdays batch in smoothies for the kids so nothing lost.
i will get it right as i am very pleased with the flavour.

like the idea of DIY yoghurt but flask methods worry me a little as im a little impatient & probably couldnt keep my attention on the job long enough to bung in the starter @ the correct temp.0
