Over the last year or two I have been slowly gaining weight. Losing a little, then managing to gain it back and more! It started around about when I gave up smoking and got a job which involved sitting still a lot! I've tried blaming it on changing my pill and going onto the implant, but even when that was removed I still got bigger!
I am now at the stage where I can no longer fit into my regular dress size and its getting me down to the point that something really needs to be done. I know I'm not too over weight, but if I don't tackle it now its only a matter of time!
What I'm after is a way of losing weight that I will be able to stick to and won't mean I have to cook seperate meals for myself and my husband. Nothing to "faddy" if you see what I mean! I have started regular exercise again, which is going to help, but I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for me?
Thanks in advance

Someone has suggested that, but it means not eating all my favourites and OH would never comply!:heartpuls

I'm trying something new - although I think you would say it's old style. I just did a bit of research on the net. So far I've lost half a stone and I don't feel hungry at all. And I go without very little of my favourite food.
I found that if you work out your Basal Metabolic Rate (do a google search) it will tell you for your age, weight and height, how many calories you burn just by sleeping all day.
Say it's 2000 calories.
If you keep to a 2000 calorie diet every day for the rest of your life, you know that you will never put on any more weight. Note that your BMR goes down the lighter you are, the older you are, the shorter you are. Ensure you always keep to that. Mine is apparently 2060. I keep to 2000 calories (allowing for 60 here and there, might overdo it one day, and under do it another day.)
Because we DON'T sleep all day, even the most sedentary person probably burns at least another 500 calories in a day. Over a week that is the equivalent of burning 1 pound of fat (3500 calories burns 1 pound of fat).
If you exercise as well, you could aim to burn another 500 calories per day through walking, cycling, jogging, football, wii fit whatever. That would burn another 1 pound of fat. This might be difficult to do, so lets say you did 1/2 a pound a week.
That would be the equivalent of 1 1/2 pounds per week, which is pretty good.
THE DIFFERENCE IS, YOU CAN KEEP TO THIS DIET.
It's not very restrictive.
It's based on simple maths and counting calories.
It's not boring so you don't keep to it.
It's not about fat content (although you shouldn't aim for excessive fat).
Every food item has calories on it. So it's not like the old days when you had to weigh everything.
As a rule I find:
I don't eat pasta and rice as it is high in calories. But I do eat potatoes (but not loads).
I stay away from chocolate (for the most part).
A typical day for me is:
Breakfast: 3 weetabix with sweetener and semi skimmed milk (300 calories).
Snack: Muller Light or Banana or 2 Apples (100 calories)
Lunch: 750 calories
Snack Muller Light or Banana or 2 Apples (100 calories).
I'm beginning to think that weight loss is similar to money saving. Simple maths and a bit of discipline.0 -

OMG!
Only 1570 calories a day. No wonder I'm hardly losing any weight on my SW Extra Easy plan , stuffing myself with bananas, spuds and roast dinners!
And there's worse to come....once I get to my ideal weight, my BMR goes down to a measly 1370 calories a day.....just to maintain my weight. Thank god I'm 5' 8'' is what I say. If I was 5'1'', I'd be looking at less than 1200 calories a day to maintain. Doesn't leave much leeway for the few glasses of wine, woofing the odd Creme Egg or 3 etc
Aaargh! How depressing.
However, thank you very much to bandraboy for this reality check. Moving my butt is the only thing that is going to give me any hope for the future!0 -
For women the BMR is lower. I guess you're - how shall I say - of mature age, slightly shorter - and quite light already????
In terms of the food, you could be talking about me

Hi just read about the BMR, not really sure how it works as yet, my BMR is 1506 so its probably no wonder I'm not losing any weight and gaining it like no tomorrow.
How many calories would I need to eat per day to lose say 1 to two pounds a week? Also, how much exercise would I need to do?0
