my oh is considering winding up his self employed business,it is fading rapidly and he wants a chance to change his career ,but in the interim could he claim jsa (has not paid any ni contributions)or would he be penelised for winding up the business,we worked out at the moment he would be better off on benefits, but not for the long term as he does want to get back into employed work.thanks

Do you work?
Do you have savings?
Do you have children?0 -
It doesn't seem likely that he'll be eligible for contributions based JSA so his ability to claim means tested JSA will depend on your earnings and whether you both have substantial savings.0

You would get income based JSA, CB, CTC, CTB and LHA (if rented) or mortgage assistance.
Not sure whether he would be sanctioned for him closing his business down, maybe someone will clarify (2-26 weeks) though you would be able to make a claim for JSA hardship payment.0 -

If there is good reason for the business to close down I do not think there would be a sanction.0 -
Don't forget to inform tax credits that you no longer have any money coming in from his job as well. It might be a bit late in the tax year to make any difference now (they make the award based on earnings over the whole tax year) but they will adjust it for the new tax year starting in April, if your oh is still out of work (hopefully not but we all know how difficult it is at the moment)0

I am trying to make a point, if you can not be nice then you should not be on this board! :rolleyes:0 -

Telling someone to 'go home' is about as racist as it gets. I've seen and heard it used against Asians in the UK many a time.
As for being nice - I didn't tell anyone to 'go home'!From Poland...with love.
