My nephew has recently passed his exams for working on gas.
The rules and regs are ridiculous.
I'm not surprised they get confused.

    Im not sure about ridiculous..!

The main bits that any domestic engineer has to concern him/herself with are

Gas safety installation and use regs (GSIUR)
    BS5440 flueing and ventilation
    RIDDOR

Knowing those bits fairly fluently will cover most situations and having copies to refer to will assist greatly though they are not cheap.

When Transco change my meter my boiler would not light, leaving me with no gas!!
I had to get new gas valve!

Do you mean a gas valve on your boiler if so that is definitely not the meter fitter problem be them from NATIONAL GRID () or any other company as that by law is a job for a differently qualified engineer currently refered to as a corgi engineer. NATIONAL GRID and other meter installers do not repair appliances and also by law have to ensure that you are left in safe position and if that means isolating the supply beit to one appliance or the property they will do so.

    Pssst.
No, not the 'main bits' I get that.
    It's the silly bits,
    One example.
I built a conservatory/bathroom/util room which meant the original back door from the kitchen now opened into the conservatory.
This meant my kitchen appliances were now 'not to current standards'.
Why?, because there was no window in the kitchen that opened directly to the outside.
    I said,
but the kitchen window opens into the conservatory and the conservatory window opens to the outside, what's the problem?

You may forget to open the consevatory window??

So it was ok before I had the conservatory to leave the kitchen window shut? Bit strange.
    There are many more.

Have you got a boiler in the kitchen if so the flue has to be on an out side wall for safe ventilation of any fumes if not would be classed as unsafe installation and would have to be moved , also where is the meter was it on rear of kitchen wall which could indicate where the service pipe that carries the gas from the mains pipe in the road to the meter is as that is another issue. - the position of the gas hob in relation to opening windows is also an issue as if gas blew out could be a risk to safety I had to alter kitchen design due to that issue - that is three of issues I know of sure pssst can advise more. as the laws are constantly changing and being updated - the corgi council can give more advice though be warned that is changing to gas safety engineers or something similar in 38 days just to confuse peeps even more. Whilst they may seem silly to you but they could mean the difference between waking up in the morning or not, which is sadly something I have come across in recent months.

No, it is in the util and is flued to the outside, like I said, my nephew is CORGI, that is how I know of all these over zealous IMHO rules.
In fact 'cause he is newly qualified he goes way over the top so i am ultra safe!! ;)
I understand they are meant to be for safety but what is the difference with the window situation?
You must either have a opening window or a extractor fan, which I have.
But you don't have to open the window, it just must be there?? No sense to me.

if gas blew out could be a risk to safety
That doesn't happen with modern hobs, there is a flame failure device.

the laws are constantly changing and being updated
Another cause for confusion, but hey if they don't keep changing the rules noone would need their appliances and buildings updating.
    Me, cynical? Never!!

that may be the case for modern hobs but not every one has a one up to current regs it is the sort of thing that only gets addressed when having new kitchens fitted or problems a pain yes but best to be over zealous rather than under. I changed my cooker about 3 yrs ago with the previous being over 20 yrs old . but it was serviced regularly along with blrs and fire.

Yes,it does sometimes happen that faults in appliances come to light following such a visit.

I suppose that is what i am on about really, the 'not up to current standards'.
If the things covered under this 'description' were dangerous, then fair enough.
They are not dangerous hence appliances are not isolated so why go into someones home and worry the occupant pointing out things that would only have to be changed if the appliance was replaced? They would be told that at the time of replacement.
An elderly person would fret for no reason and perhaps pay a fortune to put things 'right' when there is no need.
BTW, when I was getting my own fiasco sorted, the CORGI rep had to do his tour of duty around my place and noticed that the boiler expansion pipe was terminated just under the boiler.
    Apparently it should go outside.
    He turned ablind eye!!!
    It's a scam.
