BT -v- Sky WWYD?

We've just signed up to sky+HD, they were offering free broadband although we'd take the broadband that is £5 a month to get the extra download (40GB). We're currently on option 2 with BT paying £20 a month or thereabouts, that's just for the broadband, it doesn't include line rental or calls etc.
H called BT to get our migration code to cancel and go over to Sky. The BT girl said we never go over our 15GB download limit on option 2.
Anway, we haven't called sky to give the code but BT have today e-mailed and offered us line rental and broadband and free evening and weekend calls for approx £15 a month inc. VAT. This is very appealing but only offers 10GB download.
I'm keen to keep BT, far less hassle to keep what we have. My H isn't sure, I think he's worried about going over the 10GB. WWYD?

So BT haven't offered a reduction in monthly pricing? Moving to sky for BB just means a change of equipment at exchange if you are going LLU so in reallity you should gain speed for less money paid each month.
  • Yes they have, if I understand your question correctly.

We were paying £20 a month for broadband alone, the line rental etc. was all on top so we were getting a bill for approx £100 a quarter.

With this new offer they're saying pay £15 a month so it'd be £60 a quarter. The only real difference now is that sky are offering 40gb, bt are only offering 10gb

That puts them inline with Skys pricing (shocker hey) so now it's just speed and usage difference. If you don't use it that heavily and it's doing the job you need it to then there is no point in moving to sky, if however you are having issues with it or don't feel it's doing what you need it to then obviously switching is still an option.

No reduction in price ???, although the offer reduces the OP from option 2
broadband to option 1 ( reduction of 5Gb download ) they are offering free
line rental and evening and weekend calls ( although the OP may have already have calls free if they were already on the free evening and weekend plan)

Sorry, I may have over-complicated my wording. Basically it's down to will we need more than 10gb download a month? That's probably an impossible question if you don't know what we use our computer for. Just looking at the e-mail I think we'd manage fine with that. Does anyone know how much extra GB is charged at if you go over the 10 with BT?

Shocking how much they can reduce their prices by with the threat of leaving them though isn't it?

Reduction as in lower than sky, they have just matched them. In one way the OP is gaining, in another it's not that much of an incentive to not still look at Sky.

If you decide to give up your Sky Subscription at a later date. Sky will not provide you with Phone Or Broadband. This may cause you to incur extra costs.

Only BT have to allow you access to the likes of www.18185.co.uk to get cheaper calls.

BT,s inclusive calls include calls to 0845/0870 numbers. Sky,s do not.

Better the devil you know IMHO.

Thanks all. BT have matched the price but with a lesser package but it's not going to make a difference to us. Think we'll stick with it.

If you exceed your allowance for two consecutive months on BT Total Broadband Options 1 or 2, you will be charged 58p per GB (Gigabyte), starting from the second month (rounded to the nearest GB). BT Total Broadband Option 3 does not incur any excess charges. BT's Fair Usage Policy applies to customers on all Options.
Not much in reallity, so like I said down to usage and speed, if you are happy with it don't move unless you can throw it at sky sales and say sorry but BT have upped their offer

Its not just BT who offer deals to stay as Sky do exactly the same thing if you are a Sky TV customer (out of contact) and call them telling you are thinking of leaving ( cant afford it, going to cable, whatever) then they will offer you a deal to stay....not so long ago BT had to stick to the published pricelist ()due to OFCOM so as not to stiffle competition, but now as BT market share falls they are allowed to compete by offering inducements/discounts etc.....but it is unfair that you (or me) may be getting the same services from a company but not be paying the same as another customer of that company receiving exactly the same services....
On the original point unless you download/stream a lot of video or music then you probably wont exceed 10Gb, you can also install
various netmeters or check your usage online but I think BT warn you if you exceed the allowance, after 2 months and suggest you move
to another broadband option before they charge for extra gb's
