Hiya
I use minced lamb.
250g minced lamb
Onion
Tin of beans
Tin of chopped toms (optional)
Spuds for mash
Get spuds on for mash. Fry onion lightly in some butter/oil. Then add meat, when cooked through, add beans and optional toms. Put in oven dish, mash spuds and put on top spread out with spoon the use fork to get the lones around it (this just makes it llok pretty..LOL) then sometimes we add grated cheddar to the top. Sometimes we cook extra buttered onions and put this in the mash-delish!!
Good luck and its dead easy to do. The above will make enough for 4 huge portions and extra portions can be easily frozen

Fry off an onion and a 1lb of minced beef. Add a chopped carrot and diced bacon. Then a slug of brown sauce, ketchup and lea&perrins. Some pepper and dried oregano. A good glug of port or red wine. Some chopped mushrooms.....then, when they've 'wilted', a little bit of water, to just cover the mixture. Simmer for half an hour.
Make your mash potatoes with butter, no milk. (I normally boil about 3).
Heat your oven to 160 deg C (if fan assisted). Put your meat mixture in a pyrex dish, spread the mash on top. Then toss a light dusting of grated cheese over it. Bake for another half hour.Good, clean fun....MFW #11 2015 £7657 / £88800 -
There are as many different wasy to make cottage pie as people making it.
I use lamb mince for shepherd's pie and mince beef for cottage. here's what i do although it changes everytime I make it cos it's that kind of use it up dish.
Brown 1/2 lb of beef mince with two chopped onion. Chucking in a crushed garlic clove for the last few minutes.
Drain off the fat if it looks a lot and then toss 4-6 tblespns of oats in and a couple of tblespns of flour. Stir arround until the dissapear into the mince. Once it is cooked you'll think it's meat (honest)
Add sliced celery, carrot, mushrooms, mixed herbs a tin of baked beans and a tin of chopped tomatoes and half pint of stock (stock qty varies and I add extra during cooking if needs be.
I then slo-cook the mixture for 6 hrs on high or nuke for 20 mins stiring 3-4 times and then nuke on low/defrost for half and hour.
For the topping I really like a 50/50 mix of potatoes and swede or potatoes and parsnips. Mash well with a little milk and plenty of black pepper. Pile on top of the meat mixture and brown under a hot grill. Chuck some grated cheese on if you are not bothered about calories.

My family like bolognese sauce as the base for cottage pie - lots of tomatoes, red wine, oregano etc. I do it in the slow cooker - the mince. It also freezes superbly so it's woth making 2 or 3 at a go“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

Or cottage pie is made with any leftover roast & shepherds pie is made with any fresh mince.
Or cottage pie has a potato top & shepherds pie a pastry top.
