My mum has this,I will ask her,I am not sure but I know she uses grated carrots, red lentil's and a ham hock but I cannot get hold of a Ham bone, seems a nightmare and to get the flavour of the stock this is really essential.will update later when I get recipe.

Whats a Ham Hock? I'm looking to make a Pea & Ham soup, and its listed as one of the main ingreidents, I've no idea what this is and I've never shopped in a butchers before! Can I get on in one of the big supermarket? Help!0

If you have a Morrisons near you try there. We had two there this week £1.09 each. But any good butcher should sell them. It part of a pigs front leg I think.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

It's the bit of pig around the ankle bone I think.
You see them roasted in some supermarkets. Ham shanks is another name.
You don't want yours roasted.
They're usually boiled for pea and ham soup.
Bits of boiled bacon from a bacon joint would be suitable and the stock (water) from boiling the bacon joint. You'd get the flavour then.

I haven't got a recipe but it sounds if you just put the bacon pieces (chunky ones) and lentils and carrots with stock (from the bacon joint) if you're cooking one or chicken stock. The lentils will thicken it. Or add a potato in small pieces it will mash up and make it thick.
Would be good in a slow cooker.

I was in there yesterday and asked the butcher, got it home and realised it had to be cooked over night, so I slow cooked it.
Then today I went to make the soup but didn't know if to use the stock from cooking the ham, but i skimmed it and put the veg in anyway and its cooking now, it looks nothing like my mum used to make!0 -
