Wireless Question - speed

Hi
Just got 6 months free wireless deal with Wanadoo - it's working fine, but don't know if it's as fast as the wired connection.

I got 2.2Meg before, and when connected via wireless, it says the speed is 54bmps - is this ok/as fast/slower than it should be?

Might sound a silly question, but i wanted to check

The 54M is reporting the connection speed from the computer to the wireless access point, not what you're receiving across the DSL link.

To see what speed you're getting overall, you'll need to run a speed test such as adslguide

Also certain measurements are megaBITS per second and some are megaBYTES per second. (a megabyte is 8 megabits) ...I can never keep it straight which things are what but if your speed shows as roughly 1/8th of the advertised speed that is what it will be.

I -think- wireless 54mbps is fast enough to do 2 meg broadband properly, but don't quote me on it - we've only got 1 meg broadband and it works fine except at busy times of day.

More like 20Mb broadband, however people do use their wireless networks for transferring their own data, across their wireless network.

Although the wifi network is 54Mbits, you are not likely to get anywhere near that transferring data across the local network. You can get a feel for the throughput by having two PCs on you local network, transferring a very large file from one PC to the other and measuring how long it took. You will probably find you get about 3Mbytes per second. Fortunately, this is more than fast enough to keep up with your broadband connection which is a mere 2Mbits. In fact the good old 11Mbit wireless technology is fine for 2Mbits broadband.
